Grade 4-7–When her parents, the king and queen of Wonderland, are killed by her Aunt Redd, Alyss Heart escapes by jumping into the Pool of Tears. Her jump takes her to Victorian Oxford, where she emerges from a puddle, lives as a street urchin, and is eventually adopted by Reverend and Mrs. Liddell. Unable to make anyone believe her fantastic story, she finally confides in Charles Dodgson, who says he will write a book about her. When she discovers that Alice's Adventures Underground is full of make-believe, and not her story or her real name, she sadly resigns herself to life as a Victorian girl of privilege. Meanwhile, back in Wonderland, the Alyssians form a resistance movement and attempt to overthrow the despotic Redd. For years, Hatter Madigan searches the world for Alyss so she can return to Wonderland as Queen. In the end, the Alyssians prevail, but only after much graphic bloodshed and many brutal battles involving card soldiers who transform into warriors, chessmen, blades that whirl and slash, vicious Jabberwocks, and even carnivorous roses. The tale is clever and flows like an animated film where action is more important than character development. However, it bears little resemblance to Lewis Carroll's original story. Beddor has usurped the characters and setting and changed them for his own purposes, keeping only the story's frame and not much of that. Alyss Heart, heir to the Wonderland throne, is forced to flee when her vicious aunt Redd murders her parents, the King and Queen of Hearts. She escapes through the Pool of Tears to Victorian London, but she finds she has no way home. Adopted by the Liddells, who christen her Alice Liddell and disapprove of her wild stories about Wonderland, Alyss begs Charles Dodgson to tell her real story. Even though he writes Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, she knows no one believes her. Years go by, with Alice repressing her memories. Then royal bodyguard Hatter Madigan, determined to start a war for Wonderland's throne, crashes her wedding. Beddor offers some intriguing reimaginings of Dodgson's concepts (such as looking-glass travel) and characters (the cat is an assassin with nine lives), but his transformation of Wonderland's lunacy into a workable world sometimes leads to stilted exposition on history, geography, and government. Even so, his attention has, happily, put Wonderland back on the map again. Krista Hutley

Could have been brilliant

I was very excited to read this book after I met the author at the Denver Comic Con. He was very witty, charming and fun. I figured if he put any of that into his books, they have to be awesome. Problem was... I didn't really see any of that in this book.
The book is a different take on Wonderland. Supposedly the truth since Lewis Carroll did a more "disneyesque" version of the story the Alyss told him. According to this booK Looking Glass Wars is Alyss's true account.
The premise was good, the storyline was inventive, the execution was okay. My biggest problem with the book was the characters. There was nothing at all that made me like them or hate them. I felt nothing for them. I couldn't care less about what happened to them. I greatly wanted to like them but, alas, I just couldn't.
To me, that is one of the most important things in a book. Without it, who cares if the bad guys win. I know I didn't. I think stronger characterization would have made this quite an enjoyable read. Hopefully there will be improvements in that are but not sure if and when I'll go to the 2nd book.

Remarkably clever, violent, and shallow

Bear with me a moment. Pretend that there was never a book titled "Alice in Wonderland". Treat "Looking Glass Wars" as just a stand-alone war/fantasy novel. Well, it's not very good. Characters are shallow, dialogue is leaden, plot is hackneyed. Lot's of beheadings and dismemberment, in a cartoonish sort of way. Each scene is brief and barely established. Weapons just appear out of thin air, characters keep arriving in the nick of time, all of the book's progress is sketchy and thin, almost like the outline of a book in progress. It's just not very satisfying, even as a middle-school type read. (Towards the end, if you just read a sentence or two every other page you'll finish without having missed anything.)

But, the first 50 pages, where the connection is made with the original "Alice in Wonderland", is remarkably clever. The idea that "Alice ..." is a perverted, infantilized version of the true history of a parallel universe Wonderland, is just pure gold. And Beddor does a good job with that, mixing obvious and subtle references to the original "Alice ...".

Unfortunately, after those first pages the connection to "Alice ..." is not further developed, and we are just stuck with the clumsy fantasy/actioner.

So, well worth the effort to pick up a copy to read the beginning, but I'd skim the rest, (at least to pick up a few later riffs, like the stoned caterpillars), and skip the sequels.

Perfect for Sixth Grade Boys.

This is a fantastic read for anyone looking for a fantasy story about a civil war. Lots of really interesting characters. Lots of really interesting conflicts. Lots of really interesting weapons and fighting scenes.

As a sixth grade teacher, I recommend this to boys who are good readers but reluctant to read because I know they will be hooked by the story and spend time working their way through the rest of the series.

The eleven essays comprising The Bounds of Race confront this challenge with insight, rigor, and imagination.

The authors take on questions of language, genre, and politics with reference to African-American, Anglo-American, African, South African, Francophone North African, British, and Afro-Hispanic texts. Individual chapters discuss writings from an array of genres including homily, autobiography, the novel, children's literature, and political and scientific discourse. Taken together, the essays argue persuasively that the existing canon must be expanded, that the protocols of interpretation must be transformed to make a prominent place for such issues as race, and that the problem of interpretation cannot be posed in the absence of theoretically informed modes of historical investigation.

The Bounds of Race provides a subtle analysis of the variable role of racial ideologies and traces the interplay between hegemonic constraints and the strategies of resistance to them.

This volume focuses much of its attention on how issues of race and language intersect, as people of color attempt to find a grammar of resistance to oppression. In the most pointed essay, Henry Louis Gates Jr. draws on his experience as an editor of the Norton Anthology of Afro-American Literature to talk about canon formation, arguing that an African American canon must embrace an oral vernacular tradition. Nancy Leys Stepan and Sander L. Gilman trace the writings of black and Jewish scientists at the turn of the century, as they formulated an opposition to scientific racism that would succeed in the terms of discourse posited by scientific writing. Samia Mehrez presents Moroccan Abdelkebir Khatibi's "radical bilingualism" as a response to the dilemma of postcolonial literature, allowing a writer to reach the former colonizer while retaining his or her own linguistic identity. The most striking contribution to the collection is Michael Goldfield's essay suggesting that the race question has led to the failure of the U.S. to produce a viable vehicle for working-class political struggle. LaCapra is the author of Soundings in Critical Theory.

well written and very interesting

This books aim is not to prove the other religions wrong, but rather to inform you of their beliefs, and from what I can tell, the author made his best effort to insure that the information was accurate. All in all a very interesting read!

Sarah Veblen is a custom fashion designer who focuses on teaching, creating clothing for her clientele, patternmaking and design consultation for young designers, and writing in several venues. She has a Certificate in Fashion Design from Baltimore City Community College and a BA from Stanford University. Dedicated to promoting the craft of clothing design and construction at all levels, Sarah teaches in her studio as well as other classroom venues and PatternReview.com. She has been a guest lecturer at PACC/ASDP chapter events and national educational conferences; at Threadneedle Fabrics in Essex, Vermont; for CG Garment Designs in Colchester, VT; at G Street Fabrics in Rockville, Maryland; at Ca\u00f1ada College in San Mateo, California; and for ASG neighborhood groups in Maryland, Virginia, and California. The New Gold Standard on Fit

Sarah Veblen has written an extraordinary book that's light year's beyond any of the other fitting books in your bookcase. I just finished reading The Complete Photo Guide to Perfect Fitting yesterday, and it's excellent in every respect -- clearly written, comprehensive and systematic with hundred of detailed photos that show every step of the way for a variety of basic pattern styles and figures.

In my five years of sewing clothes, I've picked up a fair number of fitting techniques. But like many people, I use an improvised, hit and miss approach that kind of, sort of works but doesn't give the best possible fit.

In contrast, Perfect Fitting outlines the steps we need to take in an orderly way. The process relies on sewing a series of test muslins which are revised on the body by: establishing the all-important Horizontal Balance Line (a new term for me); releasing tight seams by opening them; clipping tight necklines and armholes; remarking shoulder seams and waistlines; and pinning tucks, darts, and open and close wedges. Then in pattern work, the muslin changes are transferred back to the pattern, the revised pattern is walked and trued, and if necessary a second muslin is sewn for further fitting improvements.

Perfect Fitting concentrates on the bodice and includes all four basic styles: shoulder princess, armhole princess, side panel and darted. All the common bodice adjustments are explained and illustrated: full and small bust adjustments, forward shoulders, rounded back, sway back, etc. Armholes, set in and raglan sleeves, and skirts are also covered, again in a high level of detail. The book does include a section on basic pants fitting, though it is relatively brief.

It's quite obvious that Sarah Veblen's ability to teach rivals her ability to sew because this book conveys not just how to do something but why it needs to be done, and that leads to a deeper understanding. Sarah also stresses the importance of aesthetics in pattern fitting so the fitting changes will enhance the garment's style and the appearance of the figure.

Before Perfect Fitting was published, I read the sample pages that are posted here on amazon, and I urge you to read them, too. I was so impressed with the book, I not only bought it, I also signed up for Sarah's online Bodice/Sleeve Fitting class that starts on the patternreview.com website next week.

If you'd like to improve the fit of your garments and have the Tried and True patterns we all strive for -- the ones that skim our bodies and flatter our figures as only custom made garments can do -- I highly recommend The Complete Photo Guide to Perfect Fit.

Wonderful resource, so many photos!

This is a fantastic book. I just ordered it last week and it has already helped me advance by leaps and bounds. Within five minutes Sarah's photos and tips had answered three nagging questions. I am a beginning garment sewer, but I have taken a few draping and patternmaking classes so I have an okay grasp of those fundamentals. I think if I were a rank beginner and not experienced at working with patterns this book would be too advanced. But it has already proven very, very helpful for me. I'm starting to work on a lot of projects where I need to create custom slopers by draping directly on duct tape dummies for out of town clients, so having these troubleshooting photos is a lifesaver. Fitting on a person is the best approach, but when your fit model can't move and tell you how things feel, a visual guide explaining so many fit issues is incredibly helpful!

I really have learned so much about fitting in just a few days. The only thing I wish was that the pants section was more comprehensive, but what is there is still very helpful. The book still gets five stars, and frankly just the tips on improving reach in the armscye are worth the price of five of these books! Not only is this helping with my work, but it makes me so excited to design some clothes for myself. Thank you, Sarah!

Narrow focus with redundant examples

This book covers a narrow selection of fitting concepts using slopers, focusing almost exclusively on muslin draping, with only some passing mention of flat pattern work. The bulk of the pages are taken up with large photos illustrating repetitive applications of the same few techniques. The book boasts of "More than 650 large format color photos" but, to be honest, all that reflects is how bloated this book is with redundancy. It is missing a lot of information that I consider very valuable for home sewers and thus not worth the price. Ms. Veblen clearly has enormous experience and great expertise with individualized fitting, but this narrow focus on her viewpoint means that the book could turn out to be not helpful at all, depending on your personal situation.

The book starts by discussing the foundational techniques for muslin-fitting, such as proper clipping and pinning methods, and how to detect and interpret basic indicators of fitting problems, such as drag lines and fold lines. This section also includes a few pages on basic pattern manipulation as a way to record muslin alterations, such as how to use a curved ruler to blend seams, and how to walk a pattern. The second section takes up the bulk of the book and applies the basic techniques from the first section towards fitting slopers (basic garments used as the foundation on which other garments are designed) and every step is illustrated with a large photo. This section first covers the overarching procedure for fitting 6 different garments, and then focuses on the exact manipulations for different areas of the body for a couple different pattern types (e.g. bust adjustments for garments with darts, princess seams, and raglan sleeves). This section is more or less repeated exercises in the concept of "add fabric where it's tight, remove fabric where it's loose." There is a final short section (4 pages) on detail adjustments such as collars and cuffs. The book does not provide any instruction on common flat pattern manipulations because the author disapproves of using them outside the context of copying muslin changes. Lastly, this book assumes that you are always starting from a pattern with a reasonably-close bust measurement and provides no info on pattern-grading. This is unfortunate, as pattern-grading is an important skill to have, especially for people who enjoy working with vintage patterns, which are not always available in the ideal size.

My biggest critique of this book is that most of it is very redundant, and spends most of its pages repeating itself rather than teaching other techniques. It's like a book that tries to teach you math by showing you 300 different addition problems: Chapter 1 - How to solve 2+2; Chapter 2 - How to solve 2+3. Because this book dwells too much on specific examples, it leaves out too much that should be covered in a book marketed towards a general audience. If the step-by-step photo illustrations had been limited to a few examples, it still would have been enough to demonstrate and reinforce the draping concepts covered in this book, while freeing up pages that could be used to teach other things like pattern grading and flat pattern alterations.

As this book stands, it is fully useful only if you are trying to fit basic slopers. If the pattern you are trying to fit does not fall under one of the specific instances illustrated in this book, or you do not have the same figure features as the models, then the only part of the book that you will find useful is the 50 pages on the basic techniques. Those basic techniques are covered in other books that also include a large quantity of useful information that this book doesn't have, and so I don't really feel like this book brings anything new to the existing reference library. Vogue Sewing, Revised and Updated and Reader's Digest's New Complete Guide to Sewing both have fitting tutorials that cover the same basic principles, though addressed through flat pattern manipulation instead of draping. Another book that is often recommended though I have not yet read is Fit for Real People.

I also take issue with the almost complete absence of information on flat pattern manipulation. It is helpful that the book teaches you how to identify fitting issues by looking at the muslin, but after that, not everyone will be able to make the alterations purely through draping, nor is it always necessary. Firstly, notice that all the pictures in the book are of one person making the changes on another. Slashing and draping is a great skill to have as a professional dressmaker working on someone else, but can be difficult to do by yourself. Setting aside the author's stated disapproval of dressforms for a moment, not all home sewers even have access to a good dressform they can use for draping muslins. Sometimes, it is much easier to address a fit issue through flat pattern manipulation. Secondly, a person sewing for herself will likely have identified her figure requirements and honed in on the particular set of alterations needed, at which point those alterations can be applied to other patterns with similar sizing and styling. For both these reasons, understanding and being able to correctly apply flat pattern alterations is a very important skill for all home sewers to have and should not be dismissed outright.

One aspect of this book that is interesting (though your mileage may vary) is that it is written in the tone of one person fitting a second person, and the word "client" is used throughout. This tone might be a bit odd for a home sewer fitting herself, but it could be argued that injecting a bit of professional detachment and viewing yourself as your own client could help the sewer be more objective about her figure needs and thus achieve a better fit.

To sum up, I don't feel this book contains enough information to justify its cost for most home sewers. The range of information covered might be useful for someone who wants to be a professional dressmaker since draping is much more useful in that context, the extensive photos could help build confidence for working with a variety of different figures, and fitting slopers to a client from which to create a various garments makes more sense than fitting a bunch of different patterns. However, I would think that Helen Armstrong's Patternmaking for Fashion Design would be a better value for someone in that position because it not only covers making slopers, it covers pattern alterations for design as well. If you are interested in buying this book, I strongly recommend you try to borrow a copy from the library or a friend first, to see how much of it you can actually use. I fully appreciate the author's point that fit is a very complex problem and it would be impossible to give step-by-step instruction on every instance of garment fitting people might come across, but the fact that the book then devotes the majority of its pages to excruciating detail about a handful of fitting scenarios instead of trying to concisely teach you how to tackle a wider variety of scenarios severely devalues the instructional value of this book. If you have the specific fit issues that this book addresses, then this could be a great follow-along guide, but if you do not, this book is mostly repetitive photos of a handful of concepts covered in 50 pages.

Simple Kindness

This is a bound and published edition of Saunders' commencement speech at Syracuse University in 2013. You could certainly complain that it's not really a "book", that it was originally published in the New York Times, and that it is very brief.

But it's worth reading.

What advice do you give to graduating students? Often it's about how to succeed in the world -- e.g., find something you love to do and do it. And there have been memorable commencement speeches of that type. Some go beyond that, e.g., the speech that Steve Jobs gave to graduating Stanford students in 2005.

Saunders gives a very simple message -- be kind.

He asks himself what he regrets in his own life, from the vantage point of decades that the students he is talking to haven't experienced yet. And the thing that he identifies is his indifference toward a girl in his school when he was young. He wasn't mean to her, but he ignored her when she needed kindness.

I can certainly think of the missed opportunities in my life when I wasn't kind to someone -- it would have taken so little. My life won't be any the less for having missed that last jump shot in the final seconds of a basketball game. It will be less for having turned away from someone who I could have helped have a better life. Few of us can say that we've kept the right balance of self-interest and kindness.

I've read criticisms of Saunders' speech, that he ignores the material difficulties facing students who graduate from college today, with poor employment opportunities and often carrying heavy college loan debts on into their distant futures. I would imagine those things weigh more heavily on their minds than whether or not they are kind persons. But Saunders' message is one from a vantage point he knows is decidedly not that of his audience but one he feels they could profit from -- it is better to decide what matters in your life before you are looking back on it.

I'd give the book 5 stars for content, but I'm giving it 4 as a "product" -- the speech itself is (and should be) available for free in a number of places, including video. I bought the book because . . . well, I buy George Saunders' books. I do like the idea that others have mentioned, of giving the book as a gift.

On the importance of kindness

George Saunders is a professor of English at Syracuse University and a writer of short stories, essays, novellas and children's books. His writing has appeared in The New Yorker and Harper's, among other publications.

In 2013, Saunders delivered the convocation speech at Syracuse University for the class of 2013, and shared it with The New York Times where it was reprinted with his permission.

In April of 2014 the speech was published by Random House in this little book. Mr. Saunders argues that "as a goal in life, you could do worse than: Try to be kinder." He understands that we all have ambitions for fame, fortune and love but urges us as much as possible to: "err in the direction of kindness. Do those things that incline you toward the big questions, and avoid the things that would reduce you and make you trivial."

Although the entire graduation speech appears in The New York Times, the book is beautifully produced. The speech takes only about 15 minutes to read but each word carries weight and meaning. It is a speech to savor and re-read often. Although the speech is available online, I recommend buying the book. But in any event, the speech is absolutely worth reading.

About the Author
Baird T. Spalding, whose name became legend in metaphysical circles during the first half of the 20th century, played an important part in introducing to the Western world knowledge of the Masters, who are assisting and guiding the destiny of mankind. Born in England, at age four he went to India. At age seventeen he finished the University and went to California where he stayed two years. He then traveled to Heidelberg, Germany and studied for eight years and then returned to California for post-graduate work in Archaeology at Berkeley and Stanford.
`After years of working with publisher Douglas DeVorss to write and promote the Life & Teaching series, Spalding died in 1953 in Arizona.

Many of the critical resources of statecraft are now in the hands of the private sector, giant technology companies in particular. About the Author
Adam Segal is the Maurice R. Greenberg senior fellow for China studies and director of the Program on Digital and Cyberspace Policy at the Council of Foreign Relations (CFR). Before coming to the CFR, Dr. Segal was an arms control analyst for the China Project at the Union of Concerned Scientists. There, he wrote about missile defense, nuclear weapons, and Asian security issues. He has been a visiting scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Center for International Studies, the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, and the Tsinghua University in Beijing. He has taught at Vassar College and Columbia University. An expert on security issues, technology development, and Chinese domestic and foreign policy, Dr. Segal was the project director for the CFR-sponsored Independent Task Force report Defending an open, Global, Secure and Resilient Internet and the author of Digital Dragon: High-Technology Enterprises in China (Cornell University Press; 2003) and Advantage: How American Innovation Can Overcome the Asian Challenge (W. W. Norton; 2011). His work has appeared in the Financial Times, The Economist, Foreign Policy, The Wall Street Journal and Foreign Affairs among others. He currently writes for the blog, "Net Politics." Dr. Segal has a BA and a PhD in government from Cornell University, and an MA in international relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University.

Segal details how the internet has evolved from its academic roots to another frontier in the international power struggle between nation-states. Fair and uncompromising in its analysis, Hacked World Order lets no country off the hook, least of all the United States. Dark in its realistic appraisal of how countries have entered the business of hacking in support of their own interests, the book also suggests a framework for establishing the rules of future cyberwarfare, in order to ensure that the relative stability inherent in the balance of power in the physical world has its counterpart in the virtual world. A fascinating, illuminating, and compelling read.

What happens when technology erodes the concept of the nation-state?

The Information Age or, as this author describes it, the Digital Age, dominates the early 21st Century. Change, brought about by computers, sensors, the internet, and the exponential interconnection of the globe because of our implementation of these technologies, races ever faster forcing individuals and societies to adjust at an ever increasing pace. I set out to explore these phenomena through 3 books: Information - A Very Short Introduction; The Hacked World Order; and, Only Humans Need Apply. This is the second of those 3 books. It met my expectations.

Adam Segal, the author, is, among other roles, the Director of the Program on Digital and Cyberspace Policy at the Council on Foreign Relations. In this role, he has been a close observer of the political, military, economic and social effects of the global expansion of cyberspace. His interest, as is perhaps not surprising, is in the effect of governmental policy on the changes wrought by the Digital Age. If this is an interest of yours, you will be rewarded; but even if not, his focus on policy is not so exclusive that you can't come away with new insights.

As frequently occurs in such a review, Stuxnet provides an early example of the changed nature of the competition between nations. To his credit the author does not dwell excessively on Stuxnet perhaps in the expectation that his readers are already familiar with this event. His analysis also looks at the rise of other powers to challenge U.S. dominance of the internet. China and Russia clearly seed to usurp dominance, but Brazil does as well. If you're interested in how this is occurring, the book provides guidance.

The impact of Edward Snowden's revelations courses throughout the book. The effect of these disclosures on diminishing American moral authority cannot be discounted. The book examines this effect carefully and, I think, fairly so. It is not an America is bad and I'll show you how hatchet job. I appreciated the, what appeared to me, fair treatment of a complex issue. Balancing moral values and national interest (with national interest being affected by the soft power conferred by morality) is not simple.

Another matter that I was somewhat aware of, but insufficiently understood, is the difficult relationship between American national interests and U.S. based multinationals such as Facebook, Google, Microsoft, IBM and others. In my mind Mr. Segal provided some useful takeaways for the Digital Age. The U.S. cannot expect to dictate the architecture of the internet; it will greatly affect the architecture, but other players will affect this architecture as well. China and Russia will continue to hack into U.S. information systems no matter what they say. Defenses against this must be undertaken and will be ever evolving. On page 226 of the hardback he quotes Jessica Mathews, the former president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, saying "Absolutes of the Westphalian system - territorially fixed states where everything of value lies within some state's borders; a single, secular authority governing each territory and representing it outside its borders and no authority above states - are all dissolving." This may be the most important takeaway.

The book met my expectations for this part of my investigation of the Information Age. I recommend it highly.

If you Work in National Security and Foreign Affairs, you need to read this book!

This is an exceptionally good treatment outlining the rapid and complex ways in which international security relations are being morphed by the effects, impacts and dynamics of cyberspace. While Henry Kissenger's New York Best-selling World Order devotes one small chapter at the end to the impact of cyberspace, Segal devotes his whole book. While I love Kindle books, I only get novels. For my serious professional reading, I have to buy the hardcopy. Why? Because I write all over them, I underline, I make margin comments. I judge how valuable a work is to me by the density of these underlinings, notes etc. I have WRITTEN ALL OVER Adam Segal's book. Understanding about this set of impacts and foreshadowing the international security relations future is a critical for any military or civilian government professional involved in national and homeland security.

Iera parte de la trilogia. Excelente,me gusto mucho. Es de las lecturas adictivas que cuando la terminas tienes que correr a buscar la 2da parte, por lo que recomiendo que se tengan las tres a mano.
