Great Resource for MT students!

I have just completed my medical transcription training and found this book so informative and useful! I especially loved the ESL hints, since I was having issues understanding them. I also found the grammar, lab, and medical equipment sections helpful. It is now going to be a great resource for the job hunt as well! On a stormy winter night, two strangers wait for a flight at the Salt Lake City airport. Ashley Knox is an attractive, successful writer, who is flying East for her much anticipated wedding. And when the pilot says the single engine prop plane can fit one more, if barely, Ben offers the seat to Ashley knowing that she needs to get back just as urgently. And then the unthinkable happens. The pilot has a heart attack mid-flight and the plane crashes into the High Uintas Wilderness-- one of the largest stretches of harsh and remote land in the United States.

Ben, who has broken ribs and Ashley, who suffers a terrible leg fracture, along with the pilot's dog, are faced with an incredibly harrowing battle to survive. Fortunately, Ben is a medical professional and avid climber (and in a lucky break, has his gear from a climb earlier in the week). With little hope for rescue, he must nurse Ashley back to health and figure out how they are going to get off the mountain, where the temperature hovers in the teens. Meanwhile, Ashley soon realizes that the very private Ben has some serious emotional wounds to heal as well. He explains to Ashley that he is separated from his beloved wife, but in a long standing tradition, he faithfully records messages for her on his voice recorder reflecting on their love affair. As Ashley eavesdrops on Ben's tender words to his estranged wife she comes to fear that when it comes to her own love story, she's just settling. And what's more: she begins to realize that the man she is really attracted to, the man she may love, is Ben.

As the days on the mountains become weeks, their survival become increasingly perilous. How will they make it out of the wilderness and if they do, how will this experience change them forever?

Prelude

            Hey…
            I’m not sure what time it is. This thing should record that. I woke a few minutes ago. It’s still dark. I don’t know how long I was out.
            The snow is spilling in through the windshield. It’s frozen across my face. Hard to blink. Feels like dried paint on my cheeks. It just doesn’t taste like dried paint.
            I’m shivering…and it feels like somebody is sitting on my chest. Can’t catch my breath. Maybe broke two or three ribs. Might have a collapsed lung.
            The wind up here is steady, leaning against the tail of the fuselage…or what’s left of it. Something above me, maybe a branch, is slapping the plexi-glass. Sounds like fingernails on a chalkboard. And more cold air is coming in behind me. Where the tail used to be.
            I can smell gas. I guess both wings were still pretty full of fuel.
            I keep feeling like I want to throw up.

            A hand is wrapped around mine. The fingers are cold and calloused. There’s a wedding band, worn thin around the edges. That’s Grover.
            He was dead before we hit the treetops. I’ll never understand how he landed this thing without killing me, too.
            When we took off, the ground temperature was in the single digits. Not sure what it is now. Feels colder. Our elevation should be around eleven-five. Give or take. We couldn’t have fallen more than five hundred feet when Grover dipped the wing. The control panel sits dark, unlit. Dusted in white. Every few minutes the GPS on the dash will flicker, then go black again.
            There was a dog here somewhere. All teeth and muscle. Real short hair. About the size of a loaf of bread. Makes snotty, gurgling sounds when he breathes. Looks like he’s jacked up on speed. Wait…
            ‘Hey, boy…Wait…no. Not there. Okay, lick but don’t jump. What’s your name? You scared? Yeah…me, too.’
            I can’t remember his name.

            I’m back…was I gone long? There’s a dog here. Buried between my coat and armpit.
            Did I already tell you about him? I can’t remember his name.
            He’s shivering and the wrinkles around his eyes are quivering. Whenever the wind howls, he jumps up and growls at it.

            The memory’s foggy. Grover and I were talking, he was flying, maybe banking right, the dash flashed a buffet of blue and green lights, a carpet of black stretched out below us, not a light bulb for sixty miles in any direction, and…there was a woman. Trying to get home to her fiancé and a rehearsal dinner. I’ll look.

            …I found her. Unconscious. Elevated pulse. Eyes are swollen shut. Pupils are dilated. Probably a concussion. Several lacerations across her face. A few will need stitches. Right shoulder is dislocated and left femur is broken. It didn’t break the skin but, her leg is angling out and suit leg is tight. I need to set it…once I catch my breath.

            …It’s getting colder. I guess the storm finally caught us. If I don’t get us wrapped in something…we’ll freeze to death before daylight. I’ll have to set that leg in the morning.

            Rachel…I don’t know how much time we have, don’t know if we’ll make it out, if…but…I take it all back. I was wrong. I was angry. I never should’ve said it. You were thinking about us. Not you. I can see that now.
            You’re right. Right all along. There’s always a chance.

            Always.

very good story!

Most reviews give a breakdown of the storyline. Two people trapped start to talk to each other about their lives and start to make realizations about their lives becase of their perilous situation. Ashley and Ben are two people that we get to know very very well and for me that makes a fantastic book. Since they are stranded we have a lot of time to delve into each of their minds. I love characterization and done well. I say that in nearly every review but it's what makes me love reading. I want to know the people I'm reading about otherwise I don't care about what happens to them. A fantastic plot can't fix the lack of character development for me. This book has both. I'm normally not a big fan of Christian fiction but dang if Mr. Martin doesn't do it very well without beating a bible over one's head. I really enjoyed this one.

Another great book from Charles Martin! I loved this book from the first page to the last. It will pull at the heart strings like all of his other books. If you havent read a Charles Martin novel yet this is a great one to start with!

Facinating Premise--HORRIFIC Editing !

Inclement weather, cancelled commerical airline flights, and happenstance find Ashley (a soon-to-be-married writer) and Ben (a married, orthopedic surgeon)on the same charter flight. The chartered plane crashes in a wilderness area; and as the sole survivors, they are tasked with dealing with their situation.

The story is well-written, entertaining, etc. However, the editing is less than stellar; and the responsible party should be sentenced to 20-lashes-with-a-wet-noodle. C'mon! Editing oversights recur throughout the book, but a couple stand out. Page 54-Ben sleeps thirty-six hours straight through. Then on page 270, he sleeps 12 hours, the longest stretch of time he's slept since the crash. HELLO? Pg. 196-A mishap ruins his makeshift snowshoes. He dismantles them and uses the components to repair the sled. However, on pg. 243, he is wearing snowshoes again (and it is several pages further before he fortuitously finds a stash of snowshoes). This type of shoddy editing really causes disruption in the continuity of the story and makes the publishing house look second-rate.

About the Author
Agnes Martin was born in Saskatchewan, Canada in 1912, and she moved to the United States in 1931. Her first solo exhibition was held in 1958 at the Betty Parsons Gallery, New York. In 1967 she moved to New Mexico and abandoned painting for seven years. The early 1990s saw her work exhibited in solo shows at the Stedelijk Museum, and at the Whitney, New York, and later in the Menil Collection, Houston, in 2002. Martin died in 2004.

About the Author
David Smith has been teaching introductory computer science classes for engineers at the Georgia Institute of Technology since 1997 when he retired from industry. Previously, he worked 31 years for Lockheed-Martin at their Marietta, Georgia, facility as a systems and software specialist with a focus on intelligent systems. He was active in designing and developing software for the C-130J, C-27J, F-22 and C-5 aircraft, and was the technical leader of the Pilot’s Associate program, a $42 million research project sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

He has a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering from Southampton University, and a master’s degree in control systems from Imperial College, London.

Content hard to understand...

Started out using the MATLAB software with this book and I'd have to say that in combination with the book and my professor, the content is still a little too hard to understand if you don't have any previous programming background.

This book is written in JARGONS. If you are new to MATLAB, this book will NOT help you understand it. YouTube will do a better job and you will save you some bucks. I am in CS 1371 where neither the teacher nor this book helps FML.

Silverton, who hails from the renowned Los Angeles bakery for which this book is named, goes back to square one in Breads for the La Brea Bakery: the yeast. While commercial yeast may work, using it doesn't really get to the essence of good bread or good bread making. Her book describes the two-week process required to create a starter the old-fashioned way. Once that is done, there are breads, pretzels, bagels, and a host of other good things to bake.

Bread is beautiful when it is made with time, care and honest ingredients; the same is true of cookbooks, and this is a beautiful cookbook. Silverton, a world-class pastry chef and owner of L.A.'s Campanile restaurant and La Brea Bakery, offers breadmaking instructions so meticulous that one gets the feeling she's divulging valuable trade secrets. Her breads are sourdough breads that depend on sourdough starter, a simple combination of flour and water left out where it can catch wild yeasts. Silverton explains the 14-day, once-in-a-lifetime process of creating the starter and the ongoing process of maintaining it. She then describes the starter and its variations and shows how they can be incorporated into a variety breads. Specialties include Walnut Bread, Rustic Olive-herb Bread, Chocolate Sour Cherry Bread and Red Pepper Scallion Bread. Lists of equipment and sources of supplies are included. Silverton and her husband (Mark Peel and Nancy Silverton at Home, LJ 2/15/94) are the chef/owners of Campanile restaurant and La Brea Bakery in Los Angeles. Silverton is a talented baker, both of sweets (Desserts by Nancy Silverton, HarperCollins, 1986) and savory baked goods. Here she offers the recipes for her popular breads and her extensive knowledge of bread baking. The subtitle might be "for the dedicated connoisseur" because every recipe but one relies on a basic starter that takes 14 days to get going (intended to be a one-time undertaking) and three "feedings" daily to maintain it, but ambitious bakers will certainly want to try Silverton's recipes. Others will find Amy Scherber and Toy Kim Dupree's Amy's Bread (LJ 4/15/96) a more accessible approach to the secrets of artisan baking, but the two books complement each other well, and Silverton's is another valuable addition to this growing genre. Highly recommended.

Best Bread

I have been a fan of the La Brea Bakery's bread for many years. I have tried many bread recipes at home, but none compare to Nancy Silverton's recipes from her La Brea Bakery. Many will say that this book is not for beginning bread bakers. This is probably true. I belive you should try baking with commercial "instant" or "Active" yeast before you try her methods. All her bread is made with a natural sourdough starter that takes two weeks to create, and requires daily feeding. The result is the best bread on earth. It is a lot of work. I end up baking more than I can eat, but my friends and family benefit from this. The recipes in this book take time: In most cases two days before a loaf is completed. It is worth it. Just schedule your time around the dough rising periods.

For the hardcore, the dedicated and the driven

This is an excellent book for those who wish to pursue baking bread armed with technical and practical information in addition to their own yeast starters.
I have yet to encounter a book that provides so much information on the making of bread and using of natural yeast starters. This is not a book for those who expect to do quick breads. For the person who wants to know how to make artisan breads at home this book is for you.
The use of starter yeasts is extensive covering white, rye, and wheat. The only other book that gives you more information about "creating" starters and sourdough is _World Sourdoughs From Antiquity_ .
The design of the book is pretty simple. Description of ingredients in detail; tools used; yeasts, starters and sourdoughs; recipes which are broken down by which type of starter used. The recipes themselves are broken into multi-day sections so that the process is more clear. Example would be the challah which is a 2 day bread. The steps themselves don't take that long but you learn the value of planning.
In essence to get something close to your favorite artisan bread you must spend time and a certain amount of patience. This book is quite honest about that and does not use shortcuts at the expense of the quality.
But what about the bread? It is good. Sometimes not as picture perfect but even the "failures" have been tasty.
A must for the baker's library. A wealth of information and interesting recipes too. Not bad for a book that is 251 pages (not counting sources and index).

Phenomenal book for the obsessed

This book is an unbelievable text for the already experienced bread baker who wants to take his/her skills to another level. Ms. Silverton is arguably the country's greatest baker, and it is her obsession with baking the perfect loaf of bread that permeates this text (note the 20+ pages of instructions for the first loaf in the book). She has spent an exhausting amount of time working out the minute details of each recipe, right down to the exact temperature of the ingredients, in order to create beautiful and flavorful loaves.
As a result, this book is definitely not for the beginner, nor is it for the quick baker looking for some easy recipes to make in a few hours. The quickest bread in this book takes two days to make, and many breads require three days. If you are obsessed with baking (as am I) and want to elevate your skills tremendously, then definitely buy this beautiful and easy-to-read book. If you're a beginner baker or someone just looking for some quick recipes for dinner, don't purchase this paean to the perfect loaf.
