Cicero's clients were rarely innocent; but so seductive is his oratory that the reader cannot help taking his side. In these speeches we are plunged into some of the most exciting courtroom dramas of all time. These new translations preserve Cicero's literary artistry and emotional force, while achieving new standards of accuracy. Each speech has its own introduction, and a general introduction discusses Cicero's public career and the criminal courts. The substantial explanatory notes smoothly guide the reader through the speeches, allowing a clearer understanding of the text.

A great lawyer. Maybe equaled but never eclipsed. The translation is excellent. A stimulating read for any trial attorney. Much to learn.

Personally, I didn't enjoy this collection as much as I did the "Political Speeches". Nevertheless, "Defence Speeches" is very readable and I'd recommend it to any student of American history and politics. Cicero lived in a republic dominated by partisan politics, where contenders for leadership positions flouted laws in the name of national security, and where the threat of populist demagogues led Cicero to take extra-legal action to save the country. This is ironic, because he defended Caesar's killing as a blow against tyranny in his amazing Philippics, only to be killed as Rome came under the sway of Emperors instead of elected officials. Not to say he was a huge believer in universal suffrage: "There's nothing more fickle than the masses, nothing more unfathomable than people's intentions, nothing more misleading than the entire process of an election." (p. 83)

Here he is on literature, crime, democracy, self-defense, and glory, the only guaranteed afterlife a person can achieve. This volume's translator and editor, D.H. Berry, presents him as a shrewd and canny politically-motivated public speaker, not above manipulating the truth in an attempt to win a trial.

McLeod-while occasionally repetative-does a really good job of giving a good overview and summarizing the 'big names' in Postcolonial lit, however there is a 2nd edition out there that is better and a little longer. I'd recommend that one over this one. Especially since most professors want the newest edition.

Don't be scared - John Mc Leod is at hand!

Beginning Postcolonialism provides a basic introduction to the nebulous (and sometimes seemingly-inpenetrable) world of post-colonial theory. If you're encountering post-colonial theory for the first time, or you've already been baffled by Bhabha and scared by Spivak, then this is the book for you! Unlike many post-colonialism readers on the market, Beginning Postcolonialism assumes no prior knowledge of the subject. It provides the reader with a basic understanding of the major themes of post-colonial theory and explains in simple terms the main ideas of pre-eminent post-colonial critics. It's well-written, coherently laid-out and is by far the most encouraging and reader-friendly book on the subject I've come across. The extensive bibliography will be of interest to graduate students, but they may otherwise find that this book is not meaty enough to suit their advanced level of study. For the beginner or the confused, however, it's a great resource!

Excellent Overview

I was so happy to find this book. Even though there is a strong emphasis on literary theory, this book was so helpful in giving an overview of the main thinkers, main issues, key historical points, and key tensions in postcolonial theory. I found it much more helpful than A Very Short Introduction to Postcolonialism. The writing is very accessible. An annotated bibliography is included at the end of each chapter. I think this book would be most helpful to read front to back if you are interested in postcolonial theory from a literary studies perspective. If you are in another field, you may want to skip around. You can find selections from this book (including searching keywords) at google books, which I found helpful in identifying the areas I wanted to read and those I wanted to skip.

Specialist but great if you need it

This is a somewhat specialised book that will serve its professional audience well, yet it is a shame that the average reader will probably never see it.

What makes a great retail display at a store tick is the essential message of this book, looking at how a strong visual product identity and placement is used to reel the customer in. Of course, from the other side, it would be good to show the typical shopper just how much thought can be involved and just how little trickery is employed.

The author provides a comprehensive step-by-step guide to developing and launching a national in-store merchandising strategy and nothing is left to chance in this information-packed, yet relatively slim volume. Mixing best practice and real world experience together, a book like this could be required reading for even the most junior of retail employees. Sure, there may be a fair bit that is of strategic significance to the senior executive, yet letting general retail staff understand a bit of the rhyme and reason behind the displays and why there can often be an overload of small rules and regulations wouldn’t hurt. There is a method to everything and nothing should be left to chance.

One of the pre-publicity comments for this book describes the issue perfectly: “At the end of the 10,000-mile supply chain, it all comes down to the final six feet. This is where visual merchandising takes over.” That really does bring matters into focus. With ever-greater competition from online vendors, retail outlets really need to squeeze every last bit out of their physical presence and grab the customer’s attention.

Do yourself a favor and click "buy", right now! You won't regret owning this book. Without it, I would not have gotten through the first 2 of 3 of my college calculus classes. I went from a D on my first calculus class test to having an A by the end of the quarter ... how? Because Calculus and Pizza makes calculus easy. The text is easy to read, doesn't weigh down the reader, and explains the math in a way that is totally understandable. I have recommended it to so many people and am thankful to the person who recommended it to me!

Good calculus book.

This book is good for anyone looking to learn calculus. It starts out with derivatives, and explains them in an easy to understand manner. The whole book uses a neat little pizza metaphor, which helps the reader grasp the concept, and the examples are well explained and informative. Overall, the book is fun and educational, and I definitely recommend it.

This is a great book on many levels. The basics of Calculus are clearly communicated. There are lots of interesting examples, and problems to solve. The story of the pizza parlor involves great imagery, and fascinating characters. Plus the chapters are short, which helps retention. I bought the book as a review tool. A lot of calculus help books are geared to just doing well on tests. Completing this book should help anyone to get a real, "feel", for the beauty and usefulness of Calculus.

Much more advice than blacksmithing.

While this is not a bad read at ALL for the would be prepped, it contains little about blacksmithing, projects, instructions or much in the way of ideas. It was however well written and instructive on other areas of the prepped life and some great survival theory or I would not have given it the score I did. Don't buy this looking for much in the way of blacksmithing advice in any way, but it was definitely worth $1.99 just as an enjoyable read for someone who wants to think about potential futures.

Pastor MacDonald has written many books, including Lord, Change My Attitude, When Life is Hard, and Gripped by the Greatness of God. Pastor MacDonald¿s teaching can be heard on Walk in the Word, a daily radio program heard on outlets across North America. Pastor MacDonald and his wife, Kathy, have three children and reside in the northwest suburbs of Chicago.

Take Responsibility for Your Own Attitude!

"Lord, Change My Attitude (Before It's Too Late)" concerns the need for us to be reponsible for our own attitudes instead of letting others or circumstances dictate how we should act. The book is a timely title, especially when you consider the entitlement mentality and blame others for our problems attiude so prevalent in society.

James MacDonald takes 5 different negative attitudes and shows how we should replace those with a better attitude. Here are the book's contents:

1. Replace a Complaining Attitude

2. With a Thankful Attitude

3. Replace a Covetous Attitude

4. With an Attitude of Contentment

5. Replace a Critical Attitude

6. With an Attitude of Love

7. Replacing a Dobuting Attitude

8. With an Attitude of Faith

9. Replacing a Rebellious Attitude

10. With an Attitude of Submission

The book is well-thought out and well-written. The reader will be challenged to examine his or her own attitude towards others and life in general. I personally liked MacDonald's writing style (simple without being simplistic, challenging, etc.) and thoroughly enjoyed the book.

The Heart of Your Relationship With God

Pastor James MacDonald presents yet another outstanding book on a very neglected topic in today's Christianity. His premise is that our bad attitudes keep us away from the victorious Spirit-filled life that God wants us to live.
Using the scandalous Old Testament story of God refusing to allow the Israelites to enter the promised land, Pastor MacDonald pulls principles and applications right out of the text to identify my attitudes that INFURIATE the Lord (grumbling, complaining, etc.) and gives me practical ways to embrace attitudes that PLEASE Him (thankfulness, contentedness, etc.).
People who have read his best-selling debut, I Really Want To Change - So Help Me God, will be familiar with his very unique writing style. Think A.W. Tozer meets ESPN SportsCenter.
So get practical, get serious and get changing with this great book.

Life Changing Study that will leave you wanting more!

This study has had an enormous affect on the ladies in my study, so much so that they want to do it a 2nd time! AND they want their husbands to see it too! You do not need the chapter book if you are going through the DVD's. The workbook is all you really need. The chapter book is basically the DVD's, word for word. Some ladies do like to have the chapter book on hand because they dont' have access to the DVD's on a regular basis. The DVD sessions are roughly 47 to 63 minutes long. The workbook lays out a plan of facilitating each session w/ discussion time in both large and small groups. Workbook consists of 5 days of homework each week for 11 weeks. James MacDonald is easy to listen to and adds humor to some challenging topics. Be ready to change!
