Since the 1985 publication of her first book, El Sur y Bene, Garc!a Morales has emerged as an important literary figure in Spain. Containing two interwoven coming-of-age novellas, the book is narrated in the voice of Adriana, a young woman unraveling the painful secrets of her childhood. In a narrative set in a labyrinthine gothic landscape sometime after the Spanish Civil War, Adriana speaks almost exclusively to the ghost of her father, who committed suicide. With the tone of a film noir voice-over, she recounts playing Joan of Arc as a childAand trying to burn an aunt at the stake. She learned divination from her outcast father, setting the stage for several semimiraculous events and giving the story its magical-realist tone. There is good and evil here, yet the "good" characters provide only moralistic rules and harsh judgments (to her mother, Adriana is "an inevitable misfortune"); the "evil" father dispenses love, guidance and magic. The second novella, also in the first person but more conventional in format, concerns the family's mysterious Gypsy maid, Bene, who may be a demon herself or the victim of diabolic machinations. Burdened with overly cinematic and occasionally contrived moments, this book is still popular in Spain, and will be of interest to U.S. readers mainly as a first work by an influential European author. Great Spanish author

"The South and Bene" includes two short novels. Spanish director Victor Erice based a movie on the first novel of Garcia Morales' book. The author has a great ability to surround her male characters with an aura of mistery. This novel is a beautiful story of the relationship of a daughter and her father. It is also a very original love story narrated in a simple way, but with great power. It is one of the best books written by an author of the new generation of Spanish writers.

Poignant and honest first hand testimony of a Holocaust survivor that is difficult to put down.

I absolutely could not put this poignant first hand testimony written by a Holocaust Survivor and was glued to this graphic and depressing first hand account of the horror of the Nazi Concentration Camps. I was able to read it from cover to cover in one afternoon and was left with a mix of emotions that is difficult to put into words. Not since the Diary of Anne Frank have I been so moved by an account of what the Jewish people suffered during the reign of the Third Reich and their horrible attempt to destroy an entire group of people.

I am still amazed about how some people still believe it didn't happen

Somehow I thought it was a longer dissertation, but instead was fairly brief compared to most books on this subject. If you want to learn more about the atrocities of the holocaust through a first person's eyes, and you don't want to spend too much time doing so, this is the book for you. I am still amazed about how some people still believe it didn't happen..but then again..some people stil believe the world is flat, and that dinosaurs lived with humans, man did not land on the moon, and that one of our new presidential candidates will make a good president..

An account of the Holocaust by a Concentration Camp survivor

I liked this much better than the Diary of Anne Frank, which many consider a 'must read' for WWII historians. This book is more or less the memories of someone who survived a Nazi concentration camp, as told in his own words (and translated into English by his wife), starting from the first signs something was coming, through his rescue by the Allies. It doesn't go into a lot of great detail, but it does a good job describing what he went through, and how he was affected by it. He does a very good job describing the 'feel' of what was happening. If you read Anne Frank, you should read this, too.
On a side note, I bought this as a 'used-good' book from BreakTimeBooks, and had an issue with the copy they sent me, and they went above and beyond normal customer service to be sure I was 100% completely satisfied, going so far as to send me a better copy, at no charge. I know occasionally things slip through that may not be quite up to snuff, but their customer service went to great lengths to ensure everything was made right, and then some.

A deeper look at the psychology of The Walking Dead

I absolutely loved this book. It takes a serious look at the psychological aspects of the show, both why viewers watch and the toll the Zombie Apocalypse (or any other type of apocalypse) takes on survivors and affects their behaviors. Psychology has always been a casual hobby of mine, and I am truly obsessed with the show, so this was right up my alley. The book is a collaborative effort of several Psychology professors and counselors, and they all offer interesting insights on varying aspects of the show.

So why DO we watch? One of the authors posits that it is because we have a longing for a sense of community, deeper relationships, and connections. There are no cell phones or computers in the ZA. No television, no Internet, and none of the constant bombardment of stimuli that we are subjected to on a daily basis. The survivors have to rely on each other for everything and deep relationships are formed. When you place your life into the hands of others on a daily basis, forging such strong bonds is a major contribution to your survival.

There is also a strong sense of nostalgia for things lost. The survivors feel it as they make their way through the wasted land filled only with walkers; something as simple as the ice cubes in Andrea’s glass of lemonade at Woodbury are seen as a long-lost luxury. After Rick and Carl flee the prison and find refuge in an empty home, Carl looks at the video games in a kid’s room and the big screen TV with longing...then rips the cord off of the useless TV to use to secure the front door. The viewers feel it, too. Seeing abandoned homes and signs of the people who lived there, seeing rusted cars grown over with kudzu, seeing a world that has ended for the vast majority of human beings...how can you not feel a sense of longing for what has been lost? The premiere episode of the show is called “Days Gone Bye” for a good reason.

Another author believes that part of the show’s appeal to so many of us is that it causes us to reflect on existential questions such as the meaning of our lives and to what purpose we would continue in such a scenario. It may cause us to confront our fears and think about how we would react in the ZA. Would we retain our humanity? Would we grow hungry with power like the Governor, or would we do whatever it takes to protect our family, like Rick is trying (and not always succeeding) to do? The author draws an analogy between survival in the ZA and survival in the death camps of the Holocaust. It’s not a bad analogy because surviving both would take courage and the ability to confront the worst that humanity has to offer. How can anyone deal with such inhumanity (in the ZA, both from the walkers and from certain other survivors) and come through unscathed? It’s natural to question our own abilities to deal with such extreme circumstances.

As for the survivors’ response, they are all suffering in varying degrees from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. They have all seen and done some incredibly horrible and brutal things and are under constant stress and constant fear. All of this can result in unpredictable behavior and bad decision-making, both of which can cost you your life or the lives of those who are looking to you for protection, resulting in further stress and survivor’s guilt. Many of the survivors have experienced psychotic breaks, such as Morgan after losing his son Duane, or Rick after Lori died. Michonne spent months by herself, talking to her dead boyfriend as if he were there. One of the big questions in the series has been, “Do you get to come back?” In other words, after all you’ve seen and done, do you get to survive with your humanity intact? It’s a question that is still being answered for many of our survivors.

The most interesting chapter to me was the one that considered Daryl Dixon’s transformation from angry redneck to reliable soldier, and even to transformative hero. The author looks at Daryl in the context of Joseph Campbell’s ‘hero arc,’ in which the character embarks on a journey of self-discovery. Daryl is compared to the classical hero Ulysses, who experiences hardships and tests in his travels and learns much about himself in the process. Daryl was an abused child, growing up in sad circumstances; he looks for Sophia with such dedication because he thinks about how he wished he could have been saved when he was a child. It has taken the ZA to make Daryl realize his potential as a human being with meaning to his life, and a valuable, trusted member of the group. As such, Daryl is a symbol of much-needed hope in the apocalyptic world. If Daryl can overcome what he did and grow into a position of trust and leadership, then there is hope for all of us. Daryl sets the bar high and challenges us to become our own “better angels.”

The book also does a few case studies of some of the characters to see if they fit the profile of a psychopath. Shane, the Governor, the Claimers, Negan, and others are examined using professional criteria.

The book concludes with the thought that zombies help us confront one of our biggest fears: our own mortality. We see that the zombies are simply bags of meat, without purpose or meaning other than finding their next meal (and hopefully it’s not us). We all have a desire to find meaning in our lives, to be more than another bag of meat. The book feels that The Walking Dead succeeds in showing the human struggle to find meaning in life, even knowing that our mortality is inevitable, and that our struggle matters.

So why do I love the show so much? Because it makes me think about all these things. Yes, you can say that it is “just a TV show,” but I’ve always felt that good TV can speak to us on a level that makes us address certain things in ourselves and also connects us with others who feel the same way. The best shows make you wonder how you would react in certain situations, whether it’s Walter White confronting a cancer diagnosis or Don Draper dealing with his past and the rapidly changing world around him. The Walking Dead makes us wonder what we would do in order to survive...or would we even want to? And why?

Highly recommended for anyone who is a fan of the show, comics, or novels.

A great book for the living and the dead!

I just finished my advance reading copy and I loved it! I'm a lifelong horror movie fan and The Walking Dead Psychology really opened my eyes as to why concepts like zombies are so darned appealing. With an insightful foreword by Night of the Living Dead co-creator John Russo and a series of fascinating chapters (by several different contributors and edited by Dr. Travis Langley) that cover virtually every psychological and sociological aspect of the zombie apocalypse, as portrayed on TWD, this book really keeps you engaged and thinking - a must read for TWD fans and zombie generalists alike!

A great find for the other kind of Dead-heads

"The Walking Dead Psychology" is for those who aren't satisfied with just The Story, but want to understand the deeper motivations and mechanisms at play in the characters. The show is so emotionally raw that its hard not to project one's self into it, wondering "How could I weather *that*??" This book will give you solid academic answers, neatly meshed with the television and comic book versions proper. Its not a dry textbook, but a labor of love. Keep your Anti-Zombie Bat-Spray handy, because the technical explanations come shoulder-to-shoulder with juicy, wrenching references to story events.

The show has wryly been called "misery porn," as no one really escapes in the end, yet the struggle is clearly mesmerizing. Too much so-called realism has permeated our popular lore until it sometimes undermines the relief or uplift we seek. However, the better zombie offerings are all *about* surrogate family and perseverance under hard conditions. There is more tension than release, but that makes it sweeter when it arises. There's something arresting about the show quote "You feel safe enough to be bored? You're lucky." Part of testing ourselves with fictional zombies involves a sideways inoculation against the real ones in politics, on the job or at Wal-mart. The show displays the paintings in the narrative house; this book shows you the internal wiring of the Why and How.

Shooting a zombie in the head is easy; coping with the apocalypse in your own head as you navigate such a mess, much less so. This is almost a missing link in any WD library, or any zombie collection. Where the absorbing "World War Z" is built from individual, subjective testaments, "The Walking Dead Psychology" describes the intersection between the clinical and the human. Its a satisfying read.

Nothing we cannot do!

As a Sweet Briar alumna, class of 1993, and proud vixen I HAD to order this book as soon as it came out. The author's wife is also an alumna of SBC and she is creative in her own right. I opened the mailer and immediately started to read the book aloud because I'll be doing so to my second-graders very soon. This book tells the story of what the vixens and SBC supporters did to right the wrong done by a rogue board who wanted the school closed. Keep your eyes out for the weasel and Judge Updike. As I read the last line aloud I started to cry because there truly is nothing that we cannot do. My SBC swag is on my car and in my classroom so I can introduce a whole new group of students to the option of Sweet Briar College. Females can be strong and this book demonstrates it through telling our story of saving the college. The illustrations done by Victoria Hang and the book written by Josh Mundy are awesome sauce, which is my way of saying it's fantastic. This is sure to become an important part of many vixen libraries. Holla holla to that!

I can't say enough great things about this book. The message and illustrations were wonderful. The villain trying to close the school is a weasel- literally. For any of you who followed the Sweet Briar College story this is fantastic.

She shows us that love, hope

The story of Vicky the Vixen provides a valuable message to all readers. She shows us that love, hope, and working hard as a team can enable us to overcome obstacles and that "there's nothing that you cannot do"! Written in rhyming verse and accompanied with colorful illustrations the story is appropriate for elementary aged children, but will also be enjoyed by older readers. Those who are familiar with the recent events surrounding Sweet Briar College will especially appreciate it.

When the World Wide Web was first invented by Tim Berners-Lee, simply having a means to create hypertext links to other documents (including ones on remote computers), and to combine text and images using basic formatting, were revolutionary concepts that we take for granted today.

But slowly web developers started getting used to the initial 20 elements provided by HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) and began adding more and more features in each new specification of the language. Luckily, though, the people driving this evelopment realized early on that if these extensions to the language were not handled sensibly, they could end up as an unwieldy, tangled web of tags. Thus HTML was created using the Document Object Model (DOM) meaning that all elements of a web page are uniquely addressable from both JavaScript and CSS.

More than that, it's also easy to insert PHP script commands into web pages too, and even integrate them with a database such as MySQL, to provide powerful back-end functionality, and the backbone of the Ajax process of behind-the-scenes communications between a web server and web browser.

In these days of widely varying browser capabilities and screen dimensions, developing code for a widening range of platforms such as iPhones, iPads, Android devices, PCs, Macs, tablets and so on, is more complicated thanever. Thankfully this book is here to help take some of that development offyour shoulders, and to save you from "reinventing the wheel" by rewritingcommonly-used processes yourself.

About the Author
Robin Nixon has been a writer for 30 years, producing in excess of 500 articles for many of the UK's top magazines, and has authored over 16 books. He started his writing career in the Cheshire homes for disabled people, where he was responsible for setting up computer rooms in a number of their residential homes, evaluating and tailoring hardware and software so that disabled people could use the new technology, and writing supporting documentation and articles for a selection of national publications.

After this Robin joined a large magazine publisher, where he held a variety of different editorial positions, before leaving to become a self-employed writer, and later branching out into developing websites (including the world's first licensed Internet radio station). In order to enable people to continue to surf whilelistening, Robin also developed the first known pop-up windows.

Robin lives on the south-east coast of England (where he writes full time), along with his five children and wife Julie (a trained nurse and university lecturer) - between them they also foster three disabled children.

A Great Book and A Great Tool

Web Developer's Cookbook by Robin Nixon is an outstanding resource. Robin provides the reader with two things. First, there is the collection of over 300 PHP, JavaScript, and CSS recipes, all built by Robin, which the reader can use instantaneously in their websites. That in itself is enough reason to purchase this book; however, he doesn't stop there. He also provides the reader with an in-depth explanation for every single recipe. Whether you are a beginner or an expert, Web Developer's Cookbook will prepare you to add interactive content to your site in no time.

Beginners - Don't expect to master PHP, JavaScript, or CSS. That is not what this book is about. These languages take years of learning and practicing to become an expert. You can expect, however, to learn how to think like a developer, and how to code the right way. Before reading Robin's book, I would spend much of my "free" time researching how to perform some action with JavaScript, most of which was wasted on looking at poorly structured, incomplete code posted in random blogs and discussion threads. Web Developer's Cookbook has given me all of that time back! Robin has expertly pinned down the most common issues developers face, and he has written clean, concise code that resolves those issues. Recognizing that not every problem is the same, Mr. Nixon provides tips on how to customize the code to meet additional needs.

Experts shouldn't feel left out, either. Developers tend to develop a particular style of writing, like many authors, and sometimes these styles stray away from the "proper" way to code. This recipe book can serve as a refresher on proper coding techniques, and also provide developers with a different view on a problem set, thus improving the developer's toolbox.

Web Developer's Cookbook is a fairly easy read, which is saying a lot for a book of code. Robin takes great care to provide the reader with a predictable flow to each chapter, and more importantly, each recipe. The chapters tend to begin with either the most simple recipes or core recipes that other recipes will build on. This not only eases the developer into the code, it creates a solid foundation to build on as well. Robin steps through each recipe, explaining in detail how it works. He also shows the reader how apply each recipe. Finally, he displays the recipe in its entirety for the reader to review.

Bottom Line: Buy the book. It will instantly become a treasured tool in your developer's toolbox.

Negatives: I'm going to be picky here because it is really hard to identify one negative thing about this collection. That being said, I would have to say this book is a little long. At 975 pages, it can be very intimidating, especially for novice developers. If the reader's goal is to read the book cover-to-cover (like mine was), it can appear to be a lot to digest.

Positives: There are so many! First, the recipes are plug-and-play. A cursory review of the recipes is all it takes to get started. Next, every recipe is explained in a way that a novice can understand. Another plus is how easy the book is to read. There is also a companion site for the book. There, you can download all of the recipes, saving you from having to write a ton of code. I could go on for days...

Disclosure: I received a free copy of the book for review. (I would still purchase this book - it's great!)

Beefy cookbook with a lot of useful info & techniques

Web Developer's Cookbook is a beefy 975 page book that includes 301 "recipes": 100 PHP recipes, 101 JavaScript recipes, and 100 CSS recipes that are well explained and that can be tailored to your own requirements. The author claims each one has been developed and debugged and will save you a lot of time. Also, HTML5 and CSS3 features are used in various recipes, making this book more "up-to-date" with newer CSS and HTML standards. The book even mentions the new Microsoft Metro interface and Windows 8 (at the time of this review, Windows 8 is still months away from release).

The PHP recipes (part II of the book) include text processing (1-10), image handling (11-20), content management (21-30), forms and user input (31-40), "the intenet" (41-50), chat and messaging (51-60), MySQL, sessions, and cookies (61-70), APIs, RSS, and XML (71-80), incorporating JavaScript (81-90), and "diverse solutions" (91-100). The JavaScript recipes (Part III of the book) include "core recipes" (1-18), location and dimensions (19-30), visibility (31-42), movement and animation (43-52), chaining and interaction (53-59), menus and navigation (60-69), text effects (70-76), audio and visual effects (77-83), cookies, ajax, and security (84-89), forms and validation (90-95), and solutions to common problems (96-101). The CSS recipes (Part IV of the book) include manipulating objects (1-19), text and typography (20-32), menus and navigation (33-38), page layout (39-45), visual effects (46-57), dynamic objects (58-75), dynamic text and typography (76-85), dynamic interaction (86-90), incorporating JavaScript (91-93), and superclasses (94-100). As you can see, there is A LOT in this book.

Note that this is not a tutorial book for learning PHP, HTML, JavaScript, or CSS. However, the recipes are explained in detail, and one of the great benefits of that is that you will very likely learn some new things and pick up some new ideas from the code explanations, so in this regard this book can be a very good learning book, even worthy of reading/skimming through it all to make sure that you understand how everything is done. By reading the explanations of the recipes and examining the code, you can improve your knowledge about things like PHP functions, regular expressions, web client/server interaction, fighting spam, form validation, security, JavaScript, CSS, and more.

You can use the "recipes" simply by including one or more of three main files, one php file (which contains the PHP recipes), one js file (which contains the JavaScript recipes), and one css file (which contains the CSS recipes). Of course you can also create your own files to include with just the recipes you use (but some recipes rely on others so make sure any dependencies are also included in any of your custom include files).

The recipes may be used in your own projects, and you may modify them, without giving any attribution (though you can if you want). Using these recipes can saves time from "reinventing the wheel".

A companion site is given, where all recipes can be downloaded, along with example files to experiment/play with, though you'll need a web server with PHP, but you can easily run one on your desktop by installing one of the packages that make it easy (more in chapter 1).

One thing I would have liked to see is more discussion about performance issues. Some of the PHP recipes seem like they may be CPU intensive, like the spell checking recipe (PHP #8) and some of the recipes that use regular expressions in loops (PHP #3). I also found some inaccuracies/typos, but they were relatively few and minor. There were also a few instances of what I would consider "bad advice" (like suggesting you can do something that results in corrupted HTML (PHP #49). However, in the grand scheme of things these issues do not detract much from the overall value of the book.

Even if you just use a few recipes from the book, this book could pay for itself in the time saved from "reinventing the wheel" or from preventing a security "disaster" that you may not have otherwise prevented by writing your own recipe. You'll probably also discover some techniques, methods, and solutions to problems that that you might not have otherwise thought of (which is always a good thing for a web developer with jobs to do and problems to solve).

Overall this 975 page book contains A LOT of useful "recipes" (which you can modify if needed) with a great potential to learn a lot just by reading the book and studying the recipes & explanations. 5 stars overall.

Complex Made Easy! Use and re-use again and again!

Just got the books few days ago, while skimming through the chapters, I was thinking aha.. I can use this, this and that in my new application. Lots of the recipes are very easy to use and save lots of your time as developer.
The first book I bought for Robin Nixon was HTML5 for iOS and Android Mobile, it was a beginner guide to mobile apps programming and I am still referring to that book almost in regular bases. You can imagine what I will do with this cookbook!
I really recommend it for anyone who wants clean, fast and proven code ready to use.
