Good for beginners

If you are new to intervention, then make it your first book to read. If not, then make it the 2nd book. The book doesn't describe the techniques in detail, but it will give a good orientation about what you are about to do, what to look for, and what to avoid. (It will answer some questions that you may be shy to ask .. shhhhh).

I have this book. This is a good introductory book but without too in depth detail. One would be better suited with the Handbook of Interventional Radiology Procedures as a pocket guide. The Requisites and Valji's IR text are excellent. A's IR book is very in depth but easy to read. As a first text for IR, I would go with Valji or the Requisites. If you are a resident, go with either one. If you are a fellow, good luck findings time to read anything but then again, you must have already read one of these books. The handbook is a good quick reference for indications/contraindications, injections rates and statistics (success rate, mortality and complication rates), meds, dosing. This is good for problem solving and patient guide. As technical skill comes with time, I would use this to help decision making. Remember, you can do many things (technically) in IR, but the real question is, "Should you." Books that answer the "should you" questions is what you need to get.

I feel that this book is a very informative guide, regardless of experience in the field. It starts at the basics and elaborates on every aspect of the interventional lab. Good introductory book for anyone starting in this area of radiology.

Great book by an amazing artist

I've been waiting for this book before I even knew I was waiting for this book. I was turned onto Hische's work in my fundamental college design classes and have since been stalking her website for inspiration during my own lettering projects. For what it's worth, I do consider Hische to be the greatest modern vector letterer there is, so I suppose this review is somewhat biased.

What I respect about Hische is that she's willing to share her secrets. If you've taken her Skillshare classes, there's a lot of repetitive info here, but even so it's great to have it in documented form so that you don't have to go back and watch the videos. If you haven't, well, prepare to get a lot of information thrown onto you that makes this a must-have manual for any aspiring letterer. What I believe is new content not seen in her video and on her website are all of the sketches, right down to the erased lines and pencil indents on the paper. The sketches not being 'retouched' to look perfect is absolutely wonderful and reassuring that not even the best letters get their lines right the first time. Hische shows her process for an intricate print featuring her most famous quote from beginning to finish, and then dives into different work she's done for clients. All of it is gorgeous, and I would be totally content with just a book of her work, but her sketches and rationales for everything bring it to life so much more.

Not to mention, this is one gorgeous book inside and out. The hardcover is thick and vibrant, the interior is designed so well, and you can tell so much care was taken with the presentation. It's a masterpiece as far as design books go and sets the standard for lettering books to come.

I've purchase many hand-lettering books, and this is by far one of the bests. (i'd expect nothing less from Jessica Hische). Her text is insightful and easy to understand. This book shows off some great process work from start to finish. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone: From the beginner to the Pro.

I would have like to see more rough thumbnails

I have mixed feelings about this book. I picked it up based on the premise that it showed the author's "process" and sketches when working on a project, in contrast to most books about design only show the final image. And while she does offer some insights into each project, most of the sketchbook images are the final draft, ready to be scanned and used in Illustrator. I would have like to see more rough thumbnails, false starts, and abandoned routes on the way to the final image. Including more of these would have helped tremendously.

So props to the author for lifting the curtain surrounding the process a bit, but disappointment that she does not pull it back completely and show projects from beginning to end.

I read the Kindle version and am happy to report that it is great. Lots of custom typefaces and impeccable formatting. A lot of work went into the design of the digital version, which most publishers would treat as an afterthought.

Love Dan but not the book.

It was a great pity not to include the final.
I found the book lacking in passion and somewhat repetitive.
A bit like a report card.
Would have liked more about Dan's family. And especially his Mum who gets very little attention.

Interesting Read

I really enjoyed the walk through of Dan's career, but there was something missing for me here. Whether it was due to Dan's intense care to present the right picture or the author, it seemed slightly like an emotionless factual timeline of Dan's career (something I already knew a lot about) as opposed to a real, raw, behind the scenes look at his life and upbringing. Still interesting enough though.

Not across the line

Very disappointed. Here we have one of the greatest fly-halves of all time (some would say the greatest) and we really know very little about Dan the player by the end of the book. What were his special playing talents? How were they demonstrated in his many great games for the All Blacks? We needed a more gripping account of the 2015 Final - something akin to McCaw's account of the 2011 final in his Autobiography. In short, I understood a little of Dan the character but nothing about Dan the player and the dramatic games in which he was involved. Sorry Duncan, you were very privileged to tell Dan's story but I await a biography by a recognized rugby journmalist

About the Author
Manami Okazaki is a freelance journalist who has been covering tattoo culture for a number of publications for nearly a decade. Her tattoo related work can be seen in the Wall Street Journal’s Scene Asia, the Japan Times newspaper, Cover magazine, Skin Deep, Tatowier, Inked (US), Skin and Ink, Tattoo Master, Tattoo Life, Bizarre, Asian Geographic, various in-flight magazines, and most of the local English language magazines in Japan. She produced and authored Japanese Buddhism x Horiyoshi III and Tattoo in Japan. She has also given tattoo related talks at the Foreign Correspondents Club, Japan.

It was after WW2 that the yakuza, or Japanese mafia proliferated, as did their love of tattoos. Ostensibly yakuza are offshoots of the otokodate, as well as the kabuki mono rebels of Edo, but became increasingly powerful in Japanese society, becoming involved with extortion, the sex industry, weapons smuggling, as well as legitimate business. Yakuza literally means 8-9-3 which is a losing hand of a gambling game, the objective of which is to get 19. The yakuza would get tattooed, sometimes under order from a superior, to prove their adherence to the group and as a symbol of loyalty and bravado. Could be Better

I paid £57 for this book in the UK (almost $100 US)

For that, I would expect a hardback masterpiece!

Now I know this is paperback and I don't mind that but contents wise, it's really not that different from other Horimono books on the market. The photos are OK but I would not say stunning. The interviews with the artists always seem to ask questions about Yakuza - who cares? I'd rather hear questions about the art of tattooing; decisions about patterns, colours, motifs etc.

I've so far only read 3 interviews with my favourite artists. They were mildly revealing but not much depth was covered.

Still, if you are into Horimono then this book must be added to the collection.

I intend to get one done one day so preparing the tattoo in my mind is of utmost importance! This book has helped with confirming which artist I prefer and it also has enough picture examples to give lots of ideas.

Very Practical -- Saved me tons of time!!!

I'd give this book ten stars if I could. I bought one copy for the office and one for my house. This guy has the ability to write simply and with the mind set of people who are busy and want to get results right away. Of course we'd all love to be leisurely scholars and plow through theory and practice but most of us just need to get things done. A good example is the way he treats ARIMA. He warns you about using auto.arima but does not hide it from you because it is "dangerous." The book is full of tips, well organized and is oriented towards beginners, though it gets into depth. So many of the R books I've read absolutely pound you with up front details, some of which relate to obscure concerns, rather than starting with a task. For example, on page 199 he writes "Problem -- you want to count the relative frequency of certain observations in your sample" Next is "Solution" -- and he explains just the minimum needed to do that job. Some of the tips are just simple time savers, such as the function head(dataframe) to show a few of the dataframe rows at the start and tail(dataframe) to show a few at the end. Finally .... I don't know this writer personally, but I hope he keeps on writing because it is a craft he has thoroughly absorbed somewhere along the line. Bill Yarberry, Houston, TX

best intro to R I've found

I'm a long time Matlab user, but have been using R for a couple months now. Still on the fence on their relative merits (they're different, let me say), but it's been interesting. I had the help of friends, but this book got me going. I bought probably 10 books, and this is far and away the best place to start. Nice combination of keeping it simple and still giving you a sense of the logic of the software. What it doesn't have is details about specific things (graphics, for example), but it gets you close enough that you can usually figure the rest out for yourself. Great book, well written, good coverage of topics -- at least for my use (analysis of international macroeconomic data).

Required reference for working in R

The R Cookbook should be on your bookshelf if you work with R.

The book is as self-described, a collection of tasks and how to accomplish those tasks in R (recipes). This is not a tutorial on the language, but is definitely recommended for novices. One of the most frustrating aspects of R for the beginner is to know what manipulations you require for a dataset, but to be clueless as to how to perform those steps in R; this book can help close that gap.

For intermediate users, it can serve as a reference. I'll often use this to jog my memory as to how a particular technique is applied, e.g., run a function on each row of a dataframe. Since the book has been available on the O'Reilly Safari system for several months, it's become one of my most-used options for R info.

Technically the book appears to be accurate, with the recipes I've used functioning well. Caveat, I have not tested any of the higher-end statistical recipes, as they aren't required in my work.

In summary, this should be one of the first books purchased when building an R library.

This volume draws together influential work by Hilary Kornblith on naturalistic epistemology.
