Great Resource for all people interested in fitness
By Carol L. Otis
This well-written and well-edited book has the most up-to-date and useful information for both lay and professional audiences. It has reliable information about fitness, wellness, and exercise and diet programs for healthy people and people with special needs. Through out the book is woven the very clever and useful concept of finding out your Fitness ID- your own unique health and skill-related identity incorporating the core concepts in this book: physical activity, nutrition, and overall wellness. In clearly illustrated text with many useful case histories, the authors show how to plan programs for diet, resistance and aerobic training, and practical tips for people of all ages and all conditions. As a practicing sports medicine physician, I wish I had this book many years ago as it is a user-friendly guide to exercise prescription for all ages, activity levels and every body. The sections on fitness for people with medical conditions is superb and has the best authors in their respective fields (Laura Kruskall on weight management, Larry Durstine and Ketih Burns on High Cholesterol). There are many useful tables (for example, the sample cross-training program at a Health Club) and the photographs show proper form for many types of exercises and stretching for people of different ages and situations. Published by the leader in the field (Human Kinetics), edited by Barbara Bushman PhD, (one of the top program directors and exercise specialists in the country) and endorsed by the American College of Sports Medicine, this is one of the best books out there and should be a foundation for any sports and fitness library.

One of my favorite books this year...extensive information yet enjoyable to read
By Chandler
This book breaks it all down...whether you are a fitness professional looking to expand your knowledge with the latest research, tools, studies, and only factual proven info into fitness and health, this is an excellent tool...

However, if you are simply someone with no current knowledge who, instead, wishes to learn how to GET healthy or how to get fit, this gives you every tool, breaks the myths, tells you how, why, and what with no mystery or hard-to-grasp reading.

I am a visual learner. My absolute favorite fitness books always read like a great textbook: easy to understand but made interesting with full color pictures, easy to understand graphs, bulletpoints, charts etc in addition to well-written text. And this book offers all those tools so nothing is left "fuzzy" or misunderstood for the reader.

It is an exercise guide but not one by someone wanting to sell a book with some "new" and unproven theory as to what will work. This, instead, is compiled from the American College of Sports Medicine so years of studies, research, and proven tools go into the teaching within.

What's in it: Physical activity and nutriton guidelines for every age.

But let's break that down...did you know that people who simply do physical activities like gardening, chores, etc daily are considered "inactive"? Physical fitness includes aerobic and strength training and the results are actually quite different for the body than mere physical activities...as outlined in the first chapter. So what's the difference? What should you be doing? What should you be eating? And how does age play a part in these questions...that's the core of the book and no matter what you think you know, you'll learn more. The book even gives specific people and their struggles and triumphs as examples to illustrate the learning and make it more interesting.

At nearly 400 pages, this is crammed full of content but oddly is easy to read and maintained my interest.

I think this book is a key component for someone wanting to learn why they should change their diet or fitness level. It's written very simply and goes into sample routines for the beginner, simple ideas into changing your lifestyle, the benefit of things like vitamins and minerals and the detriment of things such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, inactivity etc...and how all these things intertwine.

There are different "prescriptions" for children or adolescents than there are for adults of course as there are different ones for those already active as compared to someone sedentary. No one is left out. And every positive activity is touched upon including balance, flexibility, stretching, etc...not just strength training and aerobic activities.

More important, motiviaton is interspersed throughout the book because it's not just knowing, but wanting to apply it that makes all the difference. There are many ways to motivate and what works for one may not work for another so I applaud the varied approaches, suggestions, and tools throughout.

Breaking down the myths: How do carbs affect weight? Proteins? Fat? Although it can be confusing for many, it isn't the way the subjects are approached here. Because these are subjects I personally study at length, I can say confidently that the book is not only easy-to-read but MEDICALLY ACCURATE--and in an age when diet hype is on every shelf, this is the best compliment I can give it. The largest weight loss study was completed a few years ago that took 8 years to complete and is now in medical journals--this coincides with that knowledge, not a trend, or hype or unproven approach. This is accurate and medically backed.

Negatives: Although I try to balance all my reviews with positive and negatives I honestly didn't find any component of knowledge I'd change nor would I have changed the style in which it was written because it maintained my interest even when I was reading about studies I'd already read.

So disorganized!
By Chloe
I bought this textbook because it's the required one for my class. It is AWFUL. It is so freaking disorganized that I spend more time looking for what I want to know in the index and then flipping between several chapters than I do actually learning anything from it. Instead of being organized in some logical sequence, it's divided up into several chapters covering the same topic spread throughout the book. For example, there's one chapter on normal labor physiology, a different one on nursing interventions during labor, and a third one about the pain management available for normal labor, and then another one for the woman's/family's response to the labor. And that's just for the normal labors. The pathos are spread throughout the rest of the book. And you better hope you never get a timed take-home using this book because you will run out of time on the 3rd question if you don't know your stuff without having to look it up.

Great textbook
By bumbletine
Bought this textbook because it was required for my nursing class. According to upperclassmen, my school actually used to have a different textbook which was so difficult to read and understand so they changed it to this one. This textbook is definitely more student-friendly. Easy to read and understand, and several illustrations to help guide concepts. I like how it highlights essential need-to-knows every now and then for important concepts. I got an A in my class, and got lots of questions on exams correct because I remembered them directly from reading the book even though they were not reviewed during lecture. If you're genuinely interested in this nursing material and can be patient enough to read, this book is really great. Don't forget to utilize your online resources with the companion website! You can do practice quizzes for every chapter to assess your understanding!

Horrible read, very scattered.
By NolaVictoria
This book is terrible. It is poorly organized and takes you all over the place for one topic. I've never seen a book that refers to another chapter (s) for more information on so many different topics. How about we explain it completely in one topic so I'm not flipping all over the book to find the information I need? No questions to challenge your knowledge/ learning, that's a first as well. I bought it for a class and wish they had very read the book before they decided to make it the required textbook. It covers the information well enough but it is irritating flipping through many chapters to get all of the information for one topic. Very scattered.

Drama

Friedrich Durrenmatt, adapted by Maurice Valency

Characters: 25 male, 5 female, 2 children

Drop and wing; frags.

The Lunts chose this unforgettable play for their swan song. A wealthy woman returns to her debt ridden home town and offers a sum greater than they have ever imagined to help out. But there is a condition: she wants the life of a villager who years ago had caused her to be expelled from town in disgrace. Ringing denial of this absurd demand is followed by the gradual corruption of everyone in town. He is murdered and money is passed over his body to the town. The lady leaves with a fantastic entourage and with the coffin of her old lover. Voted best foreign play of the year by N.Y. Drama Critics Circle. "Stinging.... [with] astonishing power." N.Y. Herald Tribune. "A devastating drama." N.Y. Times.

A terrible translation of a beautiful play
By Eric McGill
Friedrich Dürrenmatt's play Der Besuch der alten Dame is a milestone in German language drama, one of the most significant pieces in the twentieth century. The Maurice Valency "adaptation" is barely a suggestion of the original. Obviously some things must be lost in the translation, but Valency makes unjustifiable decisions: entire scenes are excised, a great deal of dialogue has been trimmed from scenes that didn't need it, Valency has written his own scenes in, he's moved things around, and then on top of all of that he changed the main character's name for reasons that elude me. If at all possible, find another translation of this play, whether you intend to perform it or just to read it; the Valency version is a sin.

Bad translation
By Maria Sodano
A lot of elements are lost or merely suggested. Some things are also changed. Best thing is the price, but I would rather have better quality.

Dated power
By JBBurton
More dated and simple than I remembered. Believing this to be a powerful drama, as my memory recalled it, I was disappointed to find that reading it was such boring experience.

A Queer History of Fashion: From the Closet to the Catwalk, by Jonathan D. Katz

From Christian Dior to Yves Saint Laurent and Alexander McQueen, many of the greatest fashion designers of the past century have been gay.  Fashion and style have played an important role within the LGBTQ community, as well, even as early as the 18th century.  This provocative book looks at the history of fashion through a queer lens, examining high fashion as a site of gay cultural production and exploring the aesthetic sensibilities and unconventional dress of LGBTQ people, especially since the 1950s, to demonstrate the centrality of gay culture to the creation of modern fashion.

Contributions by some of the world’s most acclaimed scholars of gay history and fashion – including Christopher Breward, Shaun Cole, Vicki Karaminas, Jonathan D. Katz, Peter McNeil, and Elizabeth Wilson – investigate topics such as the context in which key designers’ lives and works form part of a broader “gay” history; the “archeology” of queer attire back to the homosexual underworld of 18th-century Europe; and the influence of LGBTQ subcultural styles from the trouser suits worn by Marlene Dietrich (which inspired Yves Saint Laurent’s “Le Smoking”) to the iconography of leather. Sumptuous illustrations include both fashion photography and archival imagery.

Review
"These informative essays trace our gay apparel from some suggestive costuming of the early 17th Century, through "out"-fits for mediated postfeminist identities, to clothing that is overt, politically affiliated and activist. Along the way are sumptuous full-color photographs of pieces from the exhibit, including an 18th Century dandy’s suit, a sexually ambiguous lady’s riding costume by Pierre Balmain, Jean Cocteau and Christian Bernard, a Gaultier’s orange velvet dress for men with conical bosoms, and even activist drag from 1903."—Edge

An account of Paul's work in which the author argues that Paul's life can be better understood by taking his Jewishness seriously and that Jewish history can be illuminated greatly be examining Paul's writings.

From Library Journal
Segal's Saul of Tarsus is a man consumed with uniting Jews and gentiles in a community focused on the resurrected Messiah. Although his efforts largely failed, Paul left behind several thriving gentile congregations and a wealth of primary source material for the study of first-century Judaism. Segal combines New Testament scholarship, modern psychological studies of conversion, and a thorough knowledge of the rabbinic literature to provide the reader with some remarkable insights into Paul's life and writings. Segal's dispassionate treatment of Paul is much preferred to the polemical speculation of Hyam Maccoby's The Mythmaker ( LJ 6/15/86). Highly recommended for academic and seminary libraries.

It is an invaluable book for any serious student of the Apostle Paul and the Pauline epistles, and it will be of considerable interest to those interested in rabbinical Judaism. The information provided about Judaism and its influence upon Paul's writings is most informative and provides tremendous insight into Paul's theology and writings. The scope and depth of the material presented in this book is amazing, and Alan Segal presents this material in a manner, which is clear, logical, and convincing. I only regret that I did not have this book when it was first released, in 1990.

Understanding Paul the Apostle
By S. E. Moore
Alan Segal gives us a whole new perspective of the Apostle Paul from a Jewish scholar who is well versed in first century Judaism. By placing Paul in his own time and culture rather than trying to identify him with the church which canonized him as a saint hundreds of years after his death, we get a much better understanding of a man who, although a prolific writer, remains an enigma.

Segal tries to understand Paul as a fellow Jew and neither lionizes him as the hero of Christendom nor disparages him as a self seeking adventurer who turned Christianity into a Hellenistic mystery religion. Segal describes Paul as a Pharisaic Jew who converted to an apocalyptic form of Judaism (primitive Christianity) based upon his revelation of the risen Christ and his years spent in Syria living with a community of gentile believers who enabled him to interpret the meaning of his revelation.

Segal claims that it is a mistake to identify Rabbinic Judaism with the first century Pharisees and to use the Mishnah and the Talmud to understand the Jewish opposition to Jesus. In Segal's own words, "it is a pity that few Jewish writers have attempted to understand Paul" and "Paul is, ironically, one of the most fruitful and reliable sources for first century Jewish religious life."

Paul's revelation can be understood in the same light as what was known later as Jewish Merkabah mysticism which, in the first century, was linked with apocalyptic beliefs (ie Qumran). Paul's risen Christ can be identified with the human figure on a throne acting as a heavenly mediator who carries the name of the Lord and reflects the glory of God which was inspired by the books of Ezekiel, Daniel, and Enoch. This figure was known by various titles such as Son of Man, Melchizedek, and Metatron.

Like Enoch, Paul claims to have gazed upon the glory of God and was thus transformed into a spiritualy resurrected being. It was the gentile community in Syria which helped Paul understand the meaning of his revelation. To Segal, Paul's writings are important evidence for the existence of first century Jewish mysticism.

Years later, Rabbinic Judaism repudiated the idea of two powers in Heaven (ie a divine heavenly mediator) which is why Jewish Christianity was branded as a heresy in the synagogue.

Even though the inclusion of gentiles was an anathema to other Jewish apocalyptic groups like the Qumranites, Paul's theology parallels many ideas found in the Dead Sea Scrolls. The idea of justification, whereby all humans are sinful and require God's grace for salvation is practically mirrored in a passage of 1QS11. Paul's dualism of flesh versus spirit is similar to the Sons of Light versus the Sons of Darkness. Segal suggests that Paul may have been aware of Essene teachings prior to his conversion.

Paul believed that believers who were baptized into the body of Christ would be transformed into the image of Christ as he had been. As an apocalypticist, Paul believed in the imminent return of Christ which would complete the transformation.

Paul's revelation and spiritual transformation radically altered his ideas about salvation. Paul felt the Torah was from God and was useful as a moral guide for all believers but that the observance of ceremonial laws like circumcision, which distinguished Jews from gentiles, were irrelevant for salvation and should not be imposed on gentile converts. To Paul, spiritual transformation through faith in the risen Christ was the key to salvation (ie resurrection in the life to come).

As a Pharisee, Paul felt that adherence to the Torah was an all-or-nothing proposition. He especially disdained individuals who tried to impose circucision as a requirement for gentile converts when these very same individuals didn't adhere to the law as stringently as he had done as a Pharisee. Paul preferred faith and spiritual transformation over a watered-down version of Jewish observances.

Segal explains Paul's dilemmas regarding the law which are difficult to comprehend. By the law, a man condemned as a criminal and ignominiously crucified cannot be the messiah, which had been the Jews' primary rejection of Jesus from the beginning. However, Paul's own revelation of seeing the glorified risen Christ told him the opposite. Thus, the Torah as a means of salvation had been replaced by the appearance of Christ.

According to Judaism, the law is only binding during one's mortal life in the present age. In Paul's way of thinking, those who have been baptized into the body of Christ have "died in Christ" and therefore have died to the ceremonial requirement of the law. To Paul, the new age had already arrived with the resurrection of Jesus and the ceremonial laws were no longer binding. The appearance of the Son of Man, according to the Book of Daniel, was a sign that the end times had been inaugurated.

Segal does an excellent job in explaining Romans 7:9-15 which is often interpreted as Paul's personal battle with lust and passion. In this passage Paul claims that the security he feels in practicing the Torah prior to his conversion is a hindrance to his faith which would make him overlook the value of his transformation. Depending on the law for one's salvation is backsliding into a former fleshly way of life and blinds one to the necessity of spiritual transformation through faith. Paul does not want his audience to depend on the law for their salvation.

Paul tried to accommodate himself to the Jerusalem apostles. He commends the Thessalonians for immitating the churches in Judea by enduring the same kind of persecutions. He implied that he became a vegetarian so as not to offend Jews or gentiles when he ate with them. He even circumcized one of his followers, Timothy. During his final journey to Jerusalem he brings an offering from his gentile converts as a sign of goodwill.

Likewise, the Jerusalem apostles were willing to accept gentile conversions based upon adherence to the Noahide laws and the majority of Jewish Christians endorsed Paul's mission to the gentiles.

What Jewish Christians did not accept was Paul forcing the issue of unity between Jewish and gentile believers by breaking down the barriers which distinguished them. Just as gentiles had to foresake immorality and idolatry, it was implied that Jews would have to foresake those ceremonial laws which distinguished them as Jews.

Paul's efforts to unify Jews and gentiles by erasing the boundaries between them ultimately led to his demise. The imminent return of Christ, which would solve this problem, did not occur. His vision of a new chosen people, both Jew and Greek, into a single body of Christ was never realized. In that respect, Paul's life was a tragedy which ended in failure. Paul did not foresee nor did he intend for an entirely new entity, the church, to emerge completely separate from Judaism. It was never Paul's intention to be canonized as a saint in a gentile church based in Rome hundreds of years after his death.

Look: Poems, by Solmaz Sharif

*Finalist for the National Book Award*

Solmaz Sharif's astonishing first book, Look, asks us to see the ongoing costs of war as the unbearable loss of human lives and also the insidious abuses against our everyday speech. In this virtuosic array of poems, lists, shards, and sequences, Sharif assembles her family's and her own fragmented narratives in the aftermath of warfare. Those repercussions echo into the present day, in the grief for those killed in America's invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, and in the discrimination endured at the checkpoints of daily encounter.

At the same time, these poems point to the ways violence is conducted against our language. Throughout this collection are words and phrases lifted from the Department of Defense Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms; in their seamless inclusion, Sharif exposes the devastating euphemisms deployed to sterilize the language, control its effects, and sway our collective resolve. But Sharif refuses to accept this terminology as given, and instead turns it back on its perpetrators. "Let it matter what we call a thing," she writes. "Let me look at you."

Review

“[An] excellent debut collection. . . . In Sharif's rendering, Look is at once a command to see and to grieve the people these words describe―and also a means of implicating the reader in the violence delivered upon these people. . . . An artful lexicographer, Sharif shows us that the diameter of a word is often as devastating as the diameter of a bomb.”―New York Times Book Review

“Sharif’s skillful debut collection draws on a Defense Department lexicon of military terms.”―The New York Times Book Review, Editors' Choice

“Remarkable. . . . By turns fierce and tender, the poems are a searing response to American intervention.” ―The New Yorker

“[Sharif's] poetry flicks between lyric and lexicon while still sounding like music; in her hands, language is as pliant as warmed wax. . . . It is the central miracle of Look that Sharif shows us the real intensity of her conceit without veering into triteness. She is, in turns, icy and searing, but consistently fierce and beautiful.” ―NPR.org

“Sharif defies power, silence, and categorization in this stunning suite. . . . In form, content, and execution, Sharif's debut is arguably the most noteworthy book of poetry yet about recent U.S.-led wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and the greater Middle East.”―Publishers Weekly *Starred Review*

“[Sharif] forces you to suspend yourself and consider your relationship to language really deeply.”―NPR, All Things Considered

“A powerful collection of verse. . . . [Sharif] turns a system of language back onto itself. . . . remarkably profound.”―BOMB Magazine

“[Solmaz] Sharif is poised to influence not only literature but larger conversations about America, war, and the Middle East.”―The Paris Review

“[An] impressive debut collection. . . . Sharif begins to replace what has been displaced, or to reclaim displacement from official state power. And it produces a vibrant, dissonant poetry that refuses to calcify.” ―Boston Review

“An urgent collection. . . . [Sharif's poems] work at the more radical aim of challenging the reader's complacency. . . . [They] demand witness.”―Bookforum

“A brilliant dive into how war affects people and language. . . . In the vein of Claudia Rankine’s Citizen, Look is, at its core, a political call to attention: If we are to combat the effects of war on people and language, we must first understand how war permeates our society and culture. To this end, Look is not only relevant, but eye opening.”―The Los Angeles Review

“Astonishing. . . . [Sharif is] a formidable poetic talent. . . . Sharif casts the light of her imagination into the world's darkest places.”―San Francisco Chronicle

“Look creates an after-image similar to that of Robin Coste Lewis’ National Book Award-winning 2015 debut, Voyage of the Sable Venus, with its meditation on the long aftermath of slavery and diaspora. Like that book, Look feels like a disassembled museum exhibit with the occluded stories ― the ones not told ― written into view. Look, it compels you to do, and you will.”―Los Angeles Times

“Though this is her first book, Look displays none of the hesitations of a debut writer. Sharif is in command of her abilities, the book at once complete and unified, but varied in subject, tone, and form. It’s a distinguished introduction.”―Literary Hub

“Look is a book that disrupts, fervently and effectively. The poems within are allergic to complacency and linguistic hypnosis; they constantly reach, inquire, prod, and wonder―sometimes with force―and refuse to allow the reader to be lulled into the sense that everything is okay in the world.”―The Rumpus

“Sharif’s writing is sparkling, precise, subtle, artful, and true. . . . Through the fine achievement of Look, Solmaz Sharif gives us the gift of her unflinching gaze.”―Kenyon Review Online

“Words can be powerful and Sharif uses them to their full potential. . . . This is a brilliant book of poetry.”―MuslimGirl

“Sharif’s Look is ambitious, intelligent, moving, important, and a little dangerous.”―Drunken Odyssey

“Sharif has been deeply and irreparably impacted by war and injustice, and she is deft at modulating her voice in this collection, scaling between broad, abstract critique and deeply intimate reflection.”―Fourth & Sycamore

“Raw, unsparing poems. . . . Highly recommended.”―Library Journal *Starred Review*

“A complicated, commanding account of contemporary American life. . . . The poems in Look shift between clear-eyed description and exhausting wariness, painful in their honest assessment of the destruction caused by our present conflicts and ways of being. . . . Look has been published just when it is most needed. . . . The work [these poems] do is utterly necessary. . . . To see another person's humanness: Look calls us back to this most simple, this most essential task.”―Harvard Review

“There are few books, whether debuts or not, to more anticipated than the publication of Solmaz Sharif’s Look.―Literary Hub

“Sharif’s work transcends the standard tropes of political poetry. Neither didactic nor angry, her poems delicately balance sadness and loss, anxiety and fear and hope and humor. . . . Illuminating and heartbreaking, Look demands that the reader pay attention to their own relationship with the adopted, euphemistic language of power, politics and destruction.”―Spectrum Culture

“Look explores the myriad ways how we go to war today reverberates through communities and states and across the world ― taking a critical stance against the way humans wage war against other countries, wage war with ourselves, and even wage war against our own language and means of expressing (or not) the inherent truths about our lives. . . . Intimate and haunting.”―Bustle

“Sharif’s poems are rich with imagery; a single line of hers can tell an entire story.”―Huffington Post

“As heart-wrenching as they are intriguing, these highly anticipated poems are beautifully devastating.”―BookTrib

“Look achieves Wallace Stevens’ critical standard of poetry by deftly responding to the true spirit of the time in which it is written. . . . [Look] is no ordinary book. . . . Crossing into such volatile aesthetic terrain charged with a radical decadence, this collection threatens even the relevance of such superlatives with obliteration. Quite possibly, it deserves to be called dangerous.”―Colorado Review

“Urgent, prophetic, and virtuosic. . . . [Sharif] rages against the dull machine of war by turning its weapons against it―into poems with which she hopes to provoke a sleeping community out of its ‘learned helplessness.’”―The The Poetry

“There is so much here that compels. . . . Sharif's collection activates the role of observer by stunning back into awareness the wounds that still suppurate, lighting the holes cut from language and their respective tears in American thinking.”―The Lit Pub

“Solmaz Sharif’s Look is something great. She throws us a brilliant, even perfect, book of poems sadly central to the nightmare of today.”―Eileen Myles

“By unearthing, decoding, and reconstructing half-hidden symbols of power built into nomenclature as well as everyday expression, the poet serves truth―sometimes delicately, other times brutally. . . . Each phrase pulls the reader into a system of being, personal and historical, and Look, line by line, extends toward prophecy and ('I am singing to her still') harmony.” ―Yusef Komunyakaa

“Solmaz Sharif's beautiful and important poems patrol the boundaries and limits of language. . . . I can’t remember a more distinguished debut.”―Eavan Boland

“I haven’t been as excited about a first book of poetry for a long time as I am about Solmaz Sharif’s forthcoming Look. . . . This feels like an important book, not just a good one.”―David Baker

"It matters what you call a thing."
By BrandonA
“Until now, now that I’ve reached my thirties: / All my Muse’s poetry has been harmless: / American and diplomatic.” It’s hard not to hear underpinning this passage, which opens the poem “Desired Appreciation,” the suggestion that for something to be accepted as American it must go along with the current, must uphold the status quo—the exact opposite of how art functions, which is by disruption. And lest there be any misunderstanding, I’ll clarify—Solmaz Sharif’s Look is a book that disrupts, fervently and effectively. The poems within are allergic to complacency and linguistic hypnosis; they constantly reach, inquire, prod, and wonder—sometimes with force—and refuse to allow the reader to be lulled into the sense that everything is okay in the world.

The first words of Look make the author’s intents known in no uncertain terms: “It matters what you call a thing.” Unflinching is a term overused when describing writers, particularly poets, but if there’s a book deserving of this phrase, it’s Look; Solmaz Sharif is insistent that the reader understand that there is something awry, something lurking below the surface level of today’s media and discourse, and she’s going after it without hesitation.

The poems in Look are interested in challenging the way we hear about and consider war by dismantling the language used when describing or reporting on it. Formally, the poems are concerned with euphemistic language; thematically, they target large-scale complacency with war. When these two tie together is where the book derives its tension and strength

The Book We Needed Before 9/11
By booklyreads
In Jonathan Schell’s The Military Half, he discusses how the U.S. army used language to dampen the awful violence they were inflicting on Vietnamese civilians. “Hootch” was slang for a Vietnamese house. The more proper military term for a Vietnamese person’s home was a “structure.” It’s fun to burn a hootch; a duty to bomb a structure; unbearable to destroy someone’s home. The language desensitized the soldiers, so that they could joke about killing children, pregnant women, and the disabled and elderly without facing reality.

My point is that our military’s issue with language goes way back. Words matter – these layers of euphemisms make way for real violence that harms real people. Solmaz Sharif offers a creative way to think about the effect that language has. She takes the words out of the perpetrators’ mouths and flings them back; she carves those words open and exposes the awful truths that lie inside.

In “Inspiration Point, Berkeley,” she starts with, “Consider Kissinger: / the honorary Globetrotter / of Harlem who spins on fingertip / the world as balloon, the buffoon / erected and be-plaqued here … ” We honor a man with the blood of millions on his hands, and she compares this ingeniously to how “the conquistadors dropped /armored mission after armored mission after saints - / Luis Obispo, Francisco, etc.”

Later in “Dependers/Immediate Family,” she discusses the violent hypermasculinity that parents instill in their (male) children, preparing them for war from the start, because they’ve been convinced that’s the honorable, patriotic way to raise a kid: “At the WWII Memorial, FDR thanks women / for sacrificing their sons / and their nylons.” And later: “Your crib, your teddy bears, / I want to say mother put a GUN / there, blocks and blocks of boys / with pistols in their lunch pails.”

I have become convinced of the urgent importance of war poetry – of poems that expose or explore meaningful, tangible topics – of poems that offer new lenses through which to view these topics. Solmaz Sharif gives us new tools for thinking about U.S. presence in the Middle East, and what it means when a military can't use words that have direct meaning. I wish this collection had been available to us years ago.

Like all art that's truly haunted me
By Ryan Sanford Smith
5 stars, 500 stars, the whole of the Milky Way. I've never read a collection so conceptually well executed while so emotionally devastating. These poems are moving, eviscerating; they are lamentations, catalogs of both brutality and intimacy. Like all art that's truly haunted me, these poems made me upset, uncomfortable for what they make me question in my own presumptions and views. Calling a book 'important' feels like such a cliche these days, but this book is.
