About the Author
Khalil Rafati is a speaker, author, and health-and-wellness entrepreneur. He has been a dog walker, a nanny, a car detailer, a furniture maker, a rehab counselor, a restaurant manager, and a drug dealer.

Today, he is the owner of Malibu Beach Yoga and SunLife Organics, a rapidly growing chain of popular juice and smoothie bars in California. He also founded Riviera Recovery, a transitional living facility for drug addicts and alcoholics, and is a board member of the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in Bylakuppe, India.

Loving What Is

I first heard about Khalil's inspirational story on the Rich Roll podcast and I was compelled to learn more about his story because he emanates an incredible peace and calm. In particular, I was moved by his ability to forgive the people in his childhood who had caused the traumas which ended up pushing him toward a reckless life of drug addiction. His acceptance/surrender of his past allowed me to start moving toward my own journey of forgiveness and self-acceptance. His book can be deeply healing for anyone because its underlying themes of unmet childhood needs, trauma, self-acceptance, redemption, friendship and finding significance are universal. The fact his life is particularly fascinating being under the employ of multiple celebrities, the depths of drug addiction and finding a life of purpose, service and love. Without spoiling the book, the amount of serendipity in this story is incredible and beautiful, and redemptive.

Powerful

This is probably one of the best addiction books I have ever read (and I have read hundreds of them!) I myself have been in recovery for 4 years. I was a raging alcoholic and I have 2 nephews (ages 20 and 23) who are addicted to meth and heroin and are both sitting in prison at this very moment. That is the very reason I chose to read this book....I wanted to gain more insight on what fuels a heroin addict. My family has been torn apart for many years, thanks to addiction. I only pray that once my nephews are out of prison, they will see the light just as Khalil did.

Love the series, hate the quality of the books they gave me

i love the mortal instrument series and I love the infernal devices series too. But I have complaints with the quality of the book. The first book of the series I received had two ripped parts of the pages off it. Ripped and the other parts scraped. Very inconvenient for someone like me who treasures the presentations of her books. I understand they will take it back and give me a new one if I ask them too but it's just a hassle, something that could have been prevented in the first place.

About the Author

Chris Nunn is a psychiatrist who researched mind/body relationships and bipolar disorder. He has been involved in the 'consciousness studies' movement since 1992.

Nice, but strange,

This little book is about consciousness, and it starts of well, as most do. You get some basic neuroscience, the exlplanation of some theories and experiments, and all is well. Nunn, however, divides the candidates for explaining consciousness in two (he shuns dualism). Theres the neural theories and the quantum theories. He holds that the latter are on the right track, and for most of the book discusses the implications of this.
Nunn then agrees with penrose, the quantum can explain consciousness, by some sort of wave collapse or bose-condensates. This is all well, and very interesting. But Nunn holds that the evidence weights in favour of this claim, which I think is strange. You see, the evidence he shows are these : EEG correlations, EEG measuring effects on task performance, and psi experiments. Now, put this against 40 years of neuroscience research on attention, memory, perception, consciousness, and you do not balance the scale. Did I mention psi and EEG correlation experiments are all controversial, to say the least?
Nunn argues that quantum theories explain more, but this is questionable. The only things at which quantum theories have a better shot, are questinable themselves. Telepathy, panpsichism, TM, etc. Nunn holds that he does not favour quantum theories because it allows one to keep some good old fashioned dualistic points of view, but constantly comments that quantum explanations of consicousness are prettier, and stretch the immagination, and allow one to keep folk psychological concepts, ......you get the point. IN truth, anything in this book is explainable by quantum and by neural theories of consciousness. The problem is that one has to give an explanation of why quantum has to be relevant to brain function, whereas this is not necessary with neural theories. Nunn does not give this explanation, (others have tried, like Hameroff).

Not too keen on this

I don't know if it was the class or the text that made me dislike this subject. This subject seems to be in place because people are forgetting how to be professional and writing memos with "instant messenger" style grammar. Maybe this text book will help the new generation become more professional, or maybe it was a complete waste of my money.

This is a "Must Have" text. If your course requires this text, don't rent it. Definitely buy it. The resources alone are worth the price.

Valuable content for the business student, educator, or communication major. Real tips such as writing a letter, responding to negative situations such as downsizing, press releases, web communication, social media, and so much more. There are many business examples from the world' stop companies to enhance learning. Great text for the undergraduate as well as the graduate student.

Excellent Condition, Came in a Timely Manner

I ordered two copies of this book on a Monday and by Thursday the box containing them was on my doorstep. I skimmed through the pages, and did not see any writing or highlighting despite the "used" condition. The only evidence that the books may have been used before is some very light marks on the cover and a slight bending of the bottom right corner. The price was certainly right as well -- in my school's bookstore, the books were over $160 apiece, and the used copies here were just about $20 each. Great price, great condition, and great shipping time. I definitely would recommend getting the book on Amazon.

Rehash of better books on the subject....

Got this on kindle.

I gave it two stars because I didn't completely hate it. The book itself is actually well written, but I've read a number of guitar teaching books and I feel that this doesn't offer anything new on running a guitar teaching business. Actually, there is A LOT lacking. It reminds me a lot of "Rob’s Totally Awesome Guitar Teaching Handbook" from Heartwood Guitar Instruction. A large section of the book is about chords, scales, and the CAGED system. Nice to have those diagrams if you are a teacher, but if you don't know that information even at the most basic level, you probably shouldn't be teaching.

I have been teaching guitar for 5 years. I developed my business into a multi-6 figure music school that is still growing. The information in this book will not help you get to that level of successful at teaching guitar. The numbers they are working with is making $1000/month, which is a good start but should not be your goal. I broke that within 2 month of starting to teach. This is a good "you can do it buddy" book, but that's really it.

This book is more an upsell to their other products, which are going to be rehashed ideas from another program. While I know this isn't a complete business guide, you'd be better off reading "Book Yourself Solid" http://www.amazon.com/Book-Yourself-Solid-Reliable-Marketing/dp/0470643471 which is rehashed a little in the book. But you'd be way better of reading that instead.

This book is basically a rehash of a number of different books, but what self-help book isn't.

Invest your time and money somewhere else....Try "Book Yourself Solid"

I was very hopeful when reading this book. Read it on Kindle Unlimited. I saw that it was a massive book about 250 pages. Great, there should be a lot of useful information in there, right?

Wrong.

While I think this book could be useful for people who have never touched guitar teaching (only reason I gave it 2 stars), it lacks in the things that really make your business successful. I should know as my business teaches about 105 teaching hours a week. Yes, let me repeat that. My business services 105 teaching hours a week, so I think I know a little something about being successful in the teaching/service industry.

This book really only touches the surface. It's got a little bit of that mental training to get you into the game so to speak, but unless you have a real game plan, you're not going to be very successful at teaching guitar with this book.

I would NEVER recommend the: "Stay one step ahead of your student." Approach. As a matter of fact, most of my customer come from teachers just like that. It doesn't work.

This book talks about the private lesson model: I have years of experience with that model doesn't work and is a pain in the ass long term. I'm working on changing that and I was hoping this book might offer some insight into that.

I wasn't really impressed with this book and I would feel bad to any guitar teacher who would read it and think it is an answer to their questions. You'd be better off purchasing a business book like "Book Yourself Solid" which helped me a lot when I was starting my business. Even though that book isn't about guitar teaching, it would be a much better investment than purchasing this book. Fortunately, I got it for free as a rental. So if you can rent it for free, go ahead and peruse through it, but if you're going to spend money on something, click away from this page and go find "Book Yourself Solid".

That would be a much better investment of your time and money.

This book came off as trying to help people who shouldn’t be teaching anyways…..For example most of the teaching section and the musicianship section are so basic…clearly on a beginner level…if you don’t know any of this, you shouldn’t be teaching right now.

The book almost seems like it’s supporting people in scamming others with chapter titles like "staying one step ahead of your students"…You don’t need to be able to see the very top of the musical mountain to teach ( even though being able to see the full view of musicianship is helpful)….but you shouldn’t be trying to stay one step ahead…

It’s a nice thought to dive into how to teach, but you could make books and books on this subject. This section is just a watered down version of many many other superior products…that they didn’t share as a source!

The business section of the book didn’t fair any better. Again it’s just a watered down product.
So if you need to quench your really dry mind with some extra watery knowledge go ahead, but it’s not worth your time. I’ll give it two stars.

An award-winning educator at the University of Maryland, Dr. James V. Green leads the education activities of the Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute. As its director of Entrepreneurship Education, he leads undergraduate and graduate courses in entrepreneurship, innovation, and technology commercialization. He has created and led a host of innovative programs and activities serving over 1,000,000 entrepreneurs and innovators from over 175 countries. With more than twenty publications to his credit, he is a thought leader in entrepreneurship education. In 2011, he earned first prize in the 3E Learning Innovative Entrepreneurship Education Competition presented at the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE). In 2013, he launched the University of Maryland’s first MOOC with Coursera’s “Developing Innovative Ideas for New Companies”. Prior to joining the University of Maryland, Dr. Green held founder, executive, and operational roles with multiple startups to include WaveCrest Laboratories (an innovator in next-generation electric and hybrid-electric propulsion and drive systems; acquired by Magna International, NYSE: MGA), Cyveillance (a software startup and world leader in cyber intelligence and intelligence-led security; acquired by QinetiQ, LSE: QQ.L), and NetMentors.Org (the first national online career development eMentoring community). Dr. Green earned a Doctor of Management and an MS in Technology Management from the University of Maryland University College, an MBA from the University of Michigan, and a BS in Industrial Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Required Reading for Achieving Entrepreneurial Success

This book succinctly codifies the very fuzzy front-end of entrepreneurial value creation. It provides a clear roadmap, especially for those new to innovation and entrepreneurship, to assess any new business or product idea in a methodical and holistic fashion.

Dr. Green synthesizes firsthand experience, academic research, market data, case studies, and entrepreneur profiles that cover a wide array of fields from individual psychology to business strategy. The result is a rich understanding of the front-end processes of entrepreneurship and chocked full of sound practical advice at each step.

Perhaps most impressive, is that this book constructively challenges you at every turn to think rationally and objectively about yourself and how well you understand your ideas.

It’s required reading for anyone serious about achieving entrepreneurial success in any setting.

but it is the perfect beginning.

As an aspiring entrepreneur, I've read a few books in my day, but this one takes a different approach, one that takes the entrepreneur into mind and works on developing the person and their habits and mindset. While these things might come naturally to an entrepreneur, to have it spelled out and determine what strengths need to be honed makes it worthy of buying. Keep in mind it is the first of a series in building an entrepreneurial venture, but it is the perfect beginning.

Great read for aspiring entrepreneurs. Like most people, I think I have a lot of great ideas that would make viable ventures. After reading The Opportunity Analysis Canvas, I now have the tools to begin to weed through my bevy of ideas and hopefully move forward with a winner.
