Ebook hard to read on Kindle App

I bought this ebook 4 days ago. The content looks pretty good.
The main issue is that this version is not a print replica. And that's a shame. It's so hard to read on the Mac. Kindle app turned out to be very sensitive to Apple Magic Mouse. You touch the mouse and it turns the pages all the time. You need to be quite patient. It's not so good to read on the Mac Book Air as well.

It has been hard to study this way. I hope they fix it and update it to the print replica as it happened to the First Aid 2016.

Another noteworthy achievement is the lack of sensationalist tone so prevalent in the literature on the topic. This book was extremely helpful in my research on serial murder. It is a good, concise, rendition of research, theories, and paradigms of multiple homicide. I recommend this book to anyone writing a research paper or who wants a synopsis of major research conducted on the topic of serial murder.

This book was such an enormous help to me while I gathered information for a study I am doing on serial killers. The way it is organized and divided into different types of killers was very useful and helped me get a good handle on what types of people commit serial crimes and their personal characteristics. Also helpful is the info on different theories people have had on serial murderers. I also liked that it was to the point and without a lot of unnecessary information. Well written, easy to read (and quick to read!) and full of very useful information, this book is not a sensationalist look at this subculture but a well-researched, well-balanced review of serial killers written by a psychologist with many many books to his name. Extremely helpful and very interesting indeed.

Even though there isn't any groundbreakingly new info in this book, it contains all of the research that has been done on serial killers and there is no other book that does that. It is full of really interesting information and I highly recommend it. I read it from cover to cover!

Meh, nothing new here.

The book is ok, however.......all of this has been discussed by her father, Dave Ramsey, for years. I applaud Rachel for giving these topics a younger, fresher view, but there is nothing new in the book.

I do follow Dave's baby steps, and it's a great plan. I just don't feel like Rachel said anything mind-blowing here. I was duped $15 for stuff I can hear on the Dave Ramsey radio program for free.

A Fresh Take - Rachel Emerges From the Shadow

TL;DR: Tried and true concepts, fresh take and easily digestible. Highly recommended.

The book offers a fresh take on some of the core concepts taught by her father Dave Ramsey but with a focus on money habits. At the heart of the book is the message to "not keep up with the Jonses" which is especially difficult in this modern social-media driven world. It feels fresh and has some new ideas but at the core remains the stuff that works (would be somewhat strange for her to depart on that). I love Dave's advice but some people find him a bit too, um... blunt? sassy? And some find his religious and political leanings (which sometimes show in his writing and often show in his speaking) off-putting. I have no problem with either but Rachel is two notches down on sass and one notch down on religion. I didn't detect anything overtly political in the book at all. So the core concepts and the fresh take may be the most palatable presentation of the material to the widest audience yet.

The only criticism I have is that it felt a bit repetitive in spots. She even says in several passages "I know we've covered this before but...". I'm a fan of short and simple - 50 pages less and the book would have been really perfect.

I give the content, presentation and style a solid 4.5 (out of 5) stars and Rachel earns the round-up for providing so much awesome free content on her YouTube channel and other social media outlets. She has stood in the long shadow of her dad for some time - in recent years you can see her peek out and with this book I feel like she finally walks far enough ahead to begin casting her own shadow.

Note: I picked up the Kindle Version which is nicely formatted and was a pleasure to read. No obvious typos or other graphical glitches except the very top of each of the major chapter breaks was cropped (literally the word HABIT was just a few pixels above the top of my Kindle DX which affected nothing in the actual reading).

Read the book and change your perspective

Awe haw- that describes so many moments I had while reading Love Your Life Not Theirs by Rachel Cruze. Where was this book when I was a newlywed! We have all been there- newly wed and broke and the pressure to keep up with what everyone else has and does (aka keeping up with the Jones). When our parents were Newleyweds they only had the joneses in their neighborhood- my generation has the jones on twitter, Instagram and Facebook. The stories Rachel shares are relatable and inspiring. As I was reading this book I reflected on her main points of finding contentment in where you are in life, making a plan for your future and giving.

"You always remember people in your life who care about you celebrate you and comfort you. Invest your time in people like this. More importantly strive to be that type of person yourself".

In regards to social media Rachel shares the trap of keeping up with the Jones
"I was chasing someone else's life instead of enjoying my own. I was letting someone I had never met influence not only how I was going to spend my money but how I was going to spend my life"

"And what I have come to realize is when we start comparing ourselves to other people we're playing a game we will never win"

"When you get caught up in social media comparisons you're comparing yourself to make believe. And when you compare yourself to make believe your real life will never feel good enough"

An excellent example of how to sell

Securing major sales requires forming connections with every prospect. I’ve read lots of books about sales habits and techniques, but had never found one which dealt with these broader challenges around sales without tilting either to mindless optimism or anti-capitalist despair. Of all the activities in business, sales is the one which forces us to confront who we are and what we are willing to do for money. emphasizes the need to ask questions and understand the prospect’s needs, then to use that information to present the benefits that will catch the buyer’s interest. Hopkins places constant emphasis is on prepared presentations, conscientiously planned. He analyzes basic needs, how to know product and prospect, who to sell, what to sell and what to tell; he lays out a program for a positive approach, ways in which to give a verbal picture, and how to stay away from argument and bluffing. With that said, Hopkins defines the most desirable attributes of the salesman; personal enthusiasm, self-confidence, understanding of people, belief in his product, and he concludes by outlining some approaches which apply to any sales problem. Nuff said.

Great for your first Hopkins book, too much review for seasoned Hopkins fans

I've been anticipating the release of this book when I saw it was being published, and as good as Tom Hopkins is (peerless, frankly, in my eyes) in the world of sales skills training, I was a little disappointed in this book.

I have read his classic, epic, bestselling and game-shifting "How to Master the Art of Selling", and I have a hard time turning anywhere else when I have questions or want to refresh on the basics. I am aware there are other sales trainers, but for my money (and the money I'll make!) Tom Hopkins is the gold-standard.

Some of his other books bear mention here: "Low Profile Selling" is fantastic, replete with scripts and language and good tips for how to approach the sales process without coming off as a pushy, greedy salesperson. His "Guide to Greatness in Sales" is another very good, very on-the-ground counsel for people who find themselves 6 months to five years in the business and are dealing with some of the requisite growing pains.

I also can't mention highly enough his 3-CD audio collection; I have relied on disc 2 (Advanced Survival Training) more than I ever thought I would and it kept me going when I was contemplating throwing in the towel.

One of the things, I think, that separates Tom Hopkins from the others is that he is selling the profession of selling to all of us, his students, in the best possible way. Demonstrating the principles he teaches, he paints vivid emotional pictures for us to imagine ourselves as successful salespeople, pictures that give us the desire to undergo the training to go out and win. It's brilliant.

So I came to the latest book with this deep respect for his teachings, and is perhaps why I was underwhelmed by the book. He surely does update some of his best material for the book, and tailor it in ways to the financial services industry, but much of what he says about sales in the financial services industry - such as that your prospects are nervous about making a big decision with their money, can they trust you with it, your company, etc.? - doesn't differ substantially from sales in other areas too: real estate, corporate purchasing, high-net worth products - anywhere, in fact, where a large purchase is made, so doesn't seem that this advice is tailored or only relevant to the financial services industry.

I suppose I was hoping for more script language, more specifically adapted material to financial services, but much of the book dwelt on fundamentals of any sales process - finessing the first impression, becoming referrable, etc - such that after all the exposure I've had to his teachings, I didn't find anything here that made me go "Wow, that's exactly right for my field!"

That said, if you are considering this as your first Tom Hopkins book, and you work in the financial services industry, I would say without a doubt that it is an excellent introduction to his teaching, and that once you read this you'd be well-served to visit the previously mentioned works too and mine them for all of their brilliance.

Updated version worth the money

I first bought "How to Master the Art of Selling" by Tom Hopkins in 1993 and then recently purchased the updated version because I am re-entering the world of sales and wanted to see how the author had updated/revised his approach.

In my opinion, Hopkins' strongest point is the attention to preparation. He outlines many specific scripts and strategies that are easily adapted to various situations. This is the best "how to" book I have come across.

While the fundamentals of selling are still basically the same (perserverence, follow-through, shameless self promotion etc.) the author did a nice job of bringing his approaches into the 21st century.

The book is well worth the money, both for the updates and the re-read.

Comprehensive Collection

This is the total collection of every work done by M.C. Esher. This book is perfect for a serious fan of the graphic work of M.C. Esher. The book also gives biographical information as well as in depth information on many of his works.

Essential for the Escher fan

And c'mon - if you've seen his work, you're a fan.

The great thing about this book is not just the extensive and readable biography, but the complete (so they say) catalog of his graphic works. Even people very familiar with Escher's ouvre will be surprised by some of the entries here. They go back to work he did at ages 18 and 19, and show the devleopment of the Escher that has become so famous. It's just a little disappointing that the catalog is printed only in black and white, when so many of his works used color. The catalog reproductions are just that - a listing of his work, not a gallery, so the quarter-page size of most pieces is adequate for recognizing a piece, if not for appreciating it fully.

It is fascinating to see Escher's style develop though his (and the twentieth century's) twenties. Various influences early on suggest Beardsley (cat. 49, 67), Picasso (cat. 51, 58), or the pervasive Art Deco of his time (cat.34). Even then, some of Escher's later fascinations begin to emerge, including hands and reflective balls (cat. 88 and 80), symmetries and tilings (cat. 61, 65), and complex interactions of many figures in a repeating structure (cat. 90). The lesser-known parts of his work also start to emerge by the time he's 30, including delicate lithographs (cat. 129, 132). As much as I love his visual paradoxes and flirtation with the infinite, the lithos and mezzotints are the pieces that truly move me. "Snow" and "Blowball" (cat. 278 and 330) have an eloquent simplicity. "Eye" and "Drop" (cat. 344 and 356) demonstrate his classical sense and his perseverance with the demanding medium of mezzotint.

The text is also thorough and enjoyable - a good thing, since it takes up half of this heavy book, including its own set of illustrations. I admit that I have only skipped around this section, which starts by describing Escher's father. It's small wonder that his father was an engineer and that his son Arthur studied geology. Although an artist to the core, Escher had fruitful contact with mathematicians and crystallographers. He is one of very few artists that have successfully incorporated hard science into their artistic vision at such a visceral level, and the scientists appreciated that as much as anyone.

Although out of print, this book is available inexpensively on the used market. It's one of the best bargains around; if you've read this far, you'll probably find it well worth having.
