Best book out there on Modigliani

For those who love the sensuous work of this early 20th century master, this text is the best on the market. The pictures span the entire short career (he died at age 36) of this artistic genius. There are stunning images throughout. The colour reproduction is superb, and the paper used is of the highest quality.
There are excellent, exhaustive descriptions of the artist's life, although the descriptions of many of the paintings are short. My only wish is that there were more nudes chosen for the exhibition, because no artist dead or alive painted a nude as beautiful or as provocative as Modigliani. The book is not cheap, but for those who admire this wonderful painter, the price is worth every penny and more.

If you like Italian art and beautiful women, then this is the book for you. Modigliani is without parallel. His art echoes the elegance of Trecento Sienese painting, elegantly garbed in the Paris of its heyday. Should your eye wonder more towards the purely formal in art, a delight in the abstract of form and colour, then Modigliani is also a master to enthral your eye and mind. Great Genre Study

This book length essay on the horror genre turned out to be much more entertaining than I expected. Even when writing a nonfiction genre-study, King cannot avoid being King. His goofy sense of humor, absolute frankness, and the occasional crass comment made me feel more like I was having a beer with the guy and discussing books than sitting in a lecture hall. King fans who want to hear where he gets his inspirations from and what authors/films he has taken enjoyment from will get a lot out of this book.

A word of caution however, if you hate spoilers, you WILL hate this book. King goes in depth in discussing several movies and books that he feels have had major influence upon the genre and he doesn't hold back from describing major plot points or endings. If you think that you might have the urge to read older sci-fi, fantasy, or horror and don't want to have any spoilers, this is not the book for you.

Sweet, Informative, and Inspiring

This book (or as the author calls it, a longer essay) on the subject of Family Purity was clear, informative, and refreshing.

I especially enjoyed the explanation of niddah (unclean/impure) status--and how it has nothing to do with the value of a person or item, but only it's legal status. For a feminist brain, it was nice to read that women aren't unclean, unworthy beings. This is a topic usually glossed over in other books, which use the word impure or unclean but don't discuss that very problematic issue for women.This author seems to be aware of the very negative connotations of such word choices--and how that might turn others off from pursuing Family Purity in their own lives.

This book is great for showing beneficial stretches that help
relieve hip and back pain. I bought it with the Psoas Release Party book, which
is good but not as detailed as this for the stretches, it helps to release and relax the muscle.
This book helps strengthen the muscles, so found it more detailed.

This is a fantastic, very informative book. It has added a great deal to my practice, especially with pregnant women. You will not regret purchasing this book! Psoas - really

I know you are thinking - what is Psoas. Well I thought that too until I found out that all my back problems, aches and pains were caused by a tight psoas muscle. I learned from Jo Ann Jones that the Psoas muscle, which is largely unheard of among the general public and most professionals, has a dramatic effect on all bodily functions because it connects the upper body to the lower body. When I first got the book I just skimmed it. Later I tried the exercises. Guess what, my psoas muscle really did release. The exercises worked like a charm. I am a sloucher with terrible posture. I have sat at a desk most of my life. This book is wonderful. It is easy to read and it provides knowledge that you can't find anywhere else.

A Must-read For All Book-lovers!!

I loved reading this book. First because I read tons of books every year, and that is not possible without some form or other of speed-reading. Second because every book on speed-reading gives me something new. Here is a book that offered me something totally new.

This is perhaps the twentieth book that I read on Speed-reading in the last 40 or so many years, and it introduced to me a totally new concept. The rest of the books that I read focused on the mechanics of observing and absorbing very fast at the mechanical level, this one goes a step further and teaches observing and absorbing at the conceptual level. I guess that this is the highest plane to which a speed-reader can get without losing focus.

The book explains the subject well, and is illustrated (mostly textually) to make the subject clear. It has definitely pushed my reading to a higher level.

Observations:

**** Sufficient text-based illustrations
**** A concept different from what most books on this subject speak of
**** I very highly recommend this book

Speed Comprehension, not just Speed Reading

I read a great deal and constantly have too much to read, so I have gone through a lot of speed reading stuff--videos, books, software, you name it. And I kept getting frustrated because it wasn't working like it was supposed to. Now, thanks to David Butler, I know why.

If anyone wants to learn speed reading, I suggest they go through his book first. (I certainly wish I had.) That way when they start coming across weird eye movement training, or odd things to do with their hands on the page, or instructions to read without comprehending (which by some magical process is supposed to kick in later), and so on, they will have a decent context for it. I will not judge anyone who gets value from that stuff, but it didn't work out for me.

btw - It says I am reviewing the Kindle version. Probably my mistake, but it's too much of a hassle to fix this. I did get the Kindle version, but I bought the printed version, too. And that's the one I read. Good thing, too, because I was able to mark it up.

David Butler's concept of "speed comprehension" works far, far better. Also, he goes into lots of discussions related to speed reading, the history of it, how the mind processes information, and so on.

I read one chapter a day--very carefully--in order to let the exercise at the end (which I read twice) make an accumulated effect. As there are twenty chapters, that took twenty days. I like my progress and improvement so much, I am going to do it all over for another round. As a bonus, there are several classics (which he used for the exercises--he used the first 1,000 words of each) I now want to read. Also, there are other texts formatted by him and he has a free online training software that I intend to get back to (after screwing it up the first time around a couple of years ago).

The reason I'm not jumping straight into the extra stuff right now after reading Butler's book is that his novelty method of alternating black with gray text in order to emphasize conceptual groupings of words on the page is clever, and it probably helped, but I did not find it essential to improving my reading. My conceptual groupings seem to fall naturally to slightly larger numbers of words than his. Still, I use the same idea and it is extremely powerful.

Frankly, after one failed attempt after another at speed reading, I'm relieved to find out that I'm not crazy or mentally deficient. (At least not because of speed reading trouble. :) ) That alone is worth the value of this book. But it's good to know I can improve my reading--both speed and comprehension--for real, as I have already done. Not super-speeds, but solid. It's also good to know I can improve even more over time with this system and, based on my own experience, know it will work.

Unusual, Helpful Approach for People Wanting to Improve Speed & Comprehension While Reading.

At 239 pages for a dollar, this is a fabulous bargain, however, it does read a little slow. Before you crack up laughing that a speed reading book reads slow, please read this review a little further.

Much of what the author describes is, or was when I took the course, in the Evelyn Woods Speed Reading course. Where this writer differs slightly, but significantly for many readers, is he emphasizes picturing what is written.

Since that is how I have always tried to read, and I assumed everybody did, I didn't find a lot of new stuff in this book. I can see, though, how other readers could gain greatly.

I enjoyed poring through his examples and textual demonstrations, for his suggested practices would otherwise be difficult to grasp.

He also has posted several helpful links.

Many readers will greatly improve their reading speed and comprehension. For them, Reading From the Right Side will prove to be their greatest book purchase in 2014 or 2015.

If I were to rate this as a $3.99 Kindle book, I would give it only four stars. But, it is priced as I write this for 99 cents, so I have to rate it five stars.
