Very generic topical overview, no real analytical discussions

I bought this as a "required" text for a groundwater hydrogeology (contaminant transport) class. The class is highly dependent on partial differential equations, incomplete integrations, Bessel functions, leaky aquifer functions, etc. It's VERY numerical in nature and it involves a LOT of higher level calculus and differential equations. Tons of mathematical derivations of different formulas to describe contaminant activity in groundwater. And I haven't done any calculus in 13 years so my math skills are a little bit rusty.

It turns out that this book is only full of basic overviews of various topics related to groundwater contamination. It does cover a wide range of topics, from drawdown definitions to site remediation strategies. But it does not give ANY specific mathematical treatments for any of it. There are no equations. It does not define any algebraic variables. There are no mathematical examples to walk a student through the process of actually solving the problems that the book describes. So it is the exact opposite of what I was hoping for; all of the info in this book, I already know from other classes that I took last year, so now I sort of wish I hadn't wasted my money on it. As an OVERVIEW text, it is actually pretty good though. So if you are NEW to groundwater theory and you want a TOPICAL explanation of things, rather than a mathematical work-through, then this is a good choice. If you want a text to show you some equations to work through problems yourself... look elsewhere.

This is definitely a must have for those with a career in contaminant subsurface hydrology. Check out chapter 3 (transformation, retardation, attenuation of solutes), chapter 8 (groundwater and soil monitoring) and chapter 9 (site remediation). Easy to read - great reference material

Each spread is devoted to one child and visitor, with a picture and the text on the left-hand page and a large picture of the adult at work on the right. The story ends with the children at play in their classroom, where they pretend to work at the jobs that appeal to them. The mother-daughter team of Anne and Lizzy Rockwell (Thanksgiving Day, 1999, etc.) presents their fourth visit to Mrs. Madoff's busy, bright, and active classroom. Today is career day, when students bring special visitors to school to talk about their work. It may be scary for a child to introduce his or her guest, but the first-person narrator does a fine job of introducing his bulldozer-driving dad, Mr. Lopez. Charlie's visitor is his mom, a judge; Kate's dad plays bass in an orchestra at night, practices, and handles child-care during the day, while his wife works in a bank. The multicultural class meets a writer, a paleontologist, a school-crossing guard, a nurse, a veterinarian, a sanitation worker, a carpenter, a grocery store manager, and even a student teacher's college professor. A full-page illustration shows each worker on the job; smaller details facing these pages introduce them and their host children to readers as well as to the rest of Mrs. Madoff's class. Carreer Day

This is the fourth book written by Anne Rockwell's about Mrs. Madoff's class. This multicultural career book has children introducing their parents' careers to the rest of the class. There is a wide variety of careers included not just the typical ones. There is an African-American mother who is a judge, a child's grandmother who is the school crossing guard, one dad is a paleontologist, a Hispanic dad is construction worker, an African-American mom is a nurse, and a mom who is a veterinarian. The characters cross different cultures and genders for the wide selection of careers chosen to be represented in this book. The illustrations are very colorful and each career is represented on two facing pages. The first page shows the child with their parent and a small picture portraying their profession. The next page shows that person working in their field of work. The text is written in a large font, which makes it easy to read.

I have used this book when doing a "Jobs in our Community" type unit with K and 1st graders. I like the many faces shown and the blurring of gender stereotyping in work. The text and illustrations are simple yet engaging.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

The children in Mrs. Madoff's class will give young readers the chance to explore many occupations as they introduce lots of interesting guests to classmates on Career Day.

Bulldozer operator, judge, musician, artist, paleontologist, crossing guard, nurse, veterinarian, sanitation truck driver, carpenter, grocery store manager and best of all, the teacher's college teacher, will entertain and inform.

The adults have interesting work to do, but so do the kids, and all the their fun activities are beautifully illustrated by Lizzy Rockwell.

Career Day is a good introduction for young readers to the world of careers open to them in that big grownup world to come. Definitely recommended.

Rachel Wells is a mother, writer and cat lover. She lives in Devon with her family and her pets and believes in the magic of animals. Rachel grew up in Devon but lived in London in her twenties working in marketing and living in a tiny flat with an elderly rescued cat, Albert. After having a child she moved back to Devon and decided to take the plunge and juggle motherhood with writing.

She has always wanted to write and now has found her voice in her first novel, ‘Alfie the Doorstep Cat’. She has always had cats as pets, ever since a young child. Rachel is delighted to have been able to combine her two main passions at last.

Not just a doorstep cat

Alfie is a cat who became homeless after his owner died. He needed to learn to survive on the streets. After doing so, he determined never to be homeless (or hungry, etc.) again, so decided to have more than one owner. He eventually was semi-owned by four families, and made a difference in all of their lives for the better. In particular, he strived to protect them. In real life, a cat might not understand things quite as well as Alfie does, although there are places where it's clear that as a cat, he doesn't follow everything. But I believe animals have emotions, and that they aren't exaggerated in this story. In the long run there is a happy ending, but the narrative is not saccharine or overdone, and the situations in which the humans find themselves are realistic. Anyone who likes cats will appreciate this story.

Just a Lovely Story

Alfie is a wonderful cat who thrives on love from people. A lovely story about a cat who loses his owner and home. He finds himself a new home, or homes, and struggles to bring it all together. This book is a real feel good story for all cat lovers of all ages. The only niggle I have is the picture on the cover is obviously a British Shorthair and they are renowned for being rather casual (lazy?) homebodies. Alfie is definitely not lazy, nor can he seem to get enough human affection. Does not affect the story, recommend this to all cat people.

Alfie is led homeless when his lady passes away. Her Family talks about the shelter in front of him which only means for most cats--death. So Alfie escapes and goes in search of his forever home. Lots of trials and adventures here. He finally selects one home and befriends the lady of the house but one doesn't seem safe enough so he selects several other homes. Each turns out to be different types of people with different problems and hurts. You guessed it--Alfie is perfect medicine for what ails people who are hurting and without a pet to love and hug. Alice works very hard to help each family, even risking his life. This book is OUTSTANDING in every good way.

If you're bored or sad or feeling lonely or just down, this is the perfect fix. With a cute animal photo and a brief sentence on every page, this book helps you see that everyone has bad days and that tomorrow promises wonderful new things. The black and white pictures are works of art and the captions match them perfectly. This book made me smile and laugh and cry. I received it as a gift from a good friend and I want to run out and buy copies for everyone I know who has ever felt down and out! A great gift idea!

Bought this for a friend who has lost 2 pregnacies and has had lots of health problems to give her some happieness. I also had this book bought for me over 10yrs ago after a suicide attempt. This book brought me some peace and smiles while a recovered. Its now my go to gift for anyone going through hard times. For anyone living life and having to much of it this book is for you.

Jane Florence Gauthier is Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Her current research interests focus on gender differences in criminal offending and issues surrounding community structure and crime.

Statistics is not as hard as everyone makes it out to be

This book is very well-written, making the information easy to comprehend without having to re-read something several times. It is a great price and I used it for one of my classes. My grade in the class reflected the helpfulness of this book.

Excellent for both undergrad and graduate statistics courses

This may sound a bit hipster-ish but my first copy of this book was back when it was still spiral bound and available only at the UNLV bookstore, it was a great resource then and cost about the same. By the time I entered grad school in 08 this book was in it's current form and was used in my grad stats class taught by Miethe. Now, four years later I am using this book as an instructor in both undergraduate and graduate courses at Arizona State University.

Everything about this book is fantastic, the only thing I would like to see is an e-book edition to keep up with the growing trend.

Simple Statistics Application in Social Research

Bought this book so that I could get a head start in finding out what was involved in this subject. I will be taking this course in the fall. I would recommend this book for anyone that will be taking it to get a head start on this subject. I do consider this book as excellent
