About the Author
Mark Burgess obtained his PhD in theoretical physics from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne in 1990. He held a Royal Society fellowship at the University of Oslo from 1991 to 1992 and then had a two-year postdoctoral fellowship from the Norwegian Research Council. Since 1994 he has been an associate professor at Oslo University College. Dr Burgess has been invited to lecture at universities and institutes throughout the world, and has published numerous articles, as well as five previous books.

Basically all exercises without much context

Received the book recently, I haven't worked through many of the exercises yet so I can't comment on how much they actually help, but I just wanted to put it out there that this book is extremely light on text and extremely heavy on exercises. It basically starts with two pages on how to hold the pick and then goes right into the exercises for the rest of the book, with maybe a paragraph here and there to inroduce a new section or concept. While the exercises are great to actually work on the subject matter, I was hoping for more information and explanation behind everything. I've been struggling with picking comfortably with any kind of speed, so I was looking forward actually reading some material behind proper picking in addition to actual picking exercises. If you just want some new ideas on exercises then this book is loaded, but if you're hoping to read about the technique behind them then you might be disappointed with this one. But hey, if the exercises actually work then that's really the point I guess. I'll update after I've put some time in with the metronome.
