If you read Sound On Sound or have Mike Senior’s other excellent book ‘Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio’ you’ll find the tone here familiar.

Senior takes a bit more for granted in the reader’s prerequisite experience. If you’re a complete beginner to recording, I would say it’s not an insurmountable learning curve, but I think Bartlett’s ‘Practical Recording Techniques’ makes a better start for someone totally new to recording – along with some trial and error experience, that will always teach you things no book can.

Senior begins with an unorthodox and intriguing project – recording a music playing machine – a tape deck, mp3 player – as a sound source. By removing the ‘distractions’ of microphones and capturing an actual ‘moving’ performance, the author introduces quite a lot of material about basic workflow and the signal chain in both analog and digital contexts. Mind you, digital is clearly emphasized.

Successive projects progress logically and I think holistically in terms of the complexity of the source sounds as well as the subtlety and sophistication of the recording techniques - ‘sophisticated’ not in the ‘glossy overproduced’ sense, but in the sense of understanding the possibilities of the gear and the overriding importance of what Senior calls ‘the human element’.

Projects include recording vocals, single mic and multiple mic configurations for various instruments, all with a degree of depth not found in other books that try to be too encyclopedic in approach.

That’s the real strength of the book in my view – by limiting his boundaries wisely Senior does more with less and provides a greater amount of relevant information that an enterprising reader will teach himself to apply in other contexts.

This ‘human element’ as the author puts it, is evident throughout the book: It’s not about gear-fetishism or how to capture/recreate trendy (or for that matter, classic) sounds. It’s about being involved deeply and intelligently in the recording process and finding that to be a reward in itself - whether you’re working in a small professional or semi-professional studio or whether your ‘Own Private Abbey Road’ is little more than a tiny, misshapen spare room somewhere and your only client is yourself.

If you buy only one book on how to make an audio recording, this should be it! Not only does Mike know his stuff inside and out, he knows how to teach what he knows. His writing comes across in a way that feels more like you're having a chat with a really cool guy who happens to be an expert in his field as opposed to being lectured to by some stuffed shirt prima donna. His previously published book, Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio, literally transformed the way I approach a mix. The first project I mixed following the road map he laid out was productive, focused, fun, and one of the best-sounding mixes I've ever done.

Recording Secrets for the Small Studio presumes a certain level of know-how from the get-go, so rank beginners may do a bit of head-scratching from time-to-time. Similarly, if you've been recording for a while there will be sections you'll be tempted to skim over or skip entirely. Don't do it! There are nuggets of engineering wisdom on nearly every page.

Great book. I really enjoyed Mixing Secrets, and so had high hopes for this book. I wasn't disappointed. This is a great discussion on how to set up and use microphones. Very in-depth, and very informative. By the end of this book, I had a much deeper understanding of how to set up mics for recording, and how to choose which ones to use.

Solid Research But E-Book Formatting Problems

This is an excellent study, and I recommend it to anyone interested in a serious examination of this period in Breton history and the Angevins' role in it. I was particularly impressed by the detailed discussions about the background of Henry II's intervention in Breton affairs, the reign of Duke Geoffrey, and the complex feudal relationships between the Breton nobles and the Plantagenets as rulers of Anjou and Normandy. I found, however, succession crisis at the time of John's accession and the disappearance of Duke Arthur I were passed over too briefly in comparison, and I wished there had been the same careful analysis of these episodes. The appendices at the end are very useful.
My chief reservation with this book concerns not the contents but the conversion to the electronic format. The typeface looks a bit faded as if it had been produced by a printer running out of ink, and so it is not as clear as it should be on the electronic paper, especially since a very small font is used in the notes. Words and even individual letters like the capital D are split in the middle for no reason, which means that word searches miss examples. The dates are spaced erratically. In some parts of the book the footnote numbers are linked to the notes, but in other parts the numbers are not only not linked, but they even are split up and attached to words in different lines, apparently at random, so it is necessary to search through the notes at the back, a frustrating process because they are out of order. Even one of the links in the table of contents does not work. This is an expensive e-book and it was worth the money for me, but I was very disappointed that the conversion was not done more carefully.

This book has some great posters from some of my favorite bands. I'm not a teenager anymore, but I still enjoyed putting them in frames and putting them up on the wall. my stairwell is now full of them. if you are looking for some interesting art, try these!

ROCKIN MY WALLS

I bought this a couple years ago after seeing it in a magazine, and it was probably one of the best things I've ever purchased for my home decor. The posters are funky and unique, with a lot of variation of style among them. There are obviously a few that are my favorites, but I genuinely like and have hung up all of them at some time or another! Plus the back side of each poster has a story about what the artist was listening to and thinking about when they designed the poster, which is pretty cool.

My favorite book

I buy it from 1987. It became around 2 times of the thickness of an original book. I dropped in at the bookstore at every trip to the United States before not the Amazon and bought it because there was a bookstore at the airport when it was SFO. Because it is update every year, the contents hardly change, but, from around 2000 when garage wine of Bordeaux has begun to become the topic, the publication of the wine of the kind feels like having begun. Because, as is expected, in comparison with R parka it is a British owner, an important point is put for the evaluation of classic wine. How many years can you update the back? I want you to be well forever.

Really useful

Really useful book. It goes country by country and lists the many growers and marks them. I have used it a few times before going out to eat to have a look at a wine list on-line, checking it against this book and deciding my wine before I even leave the house. This has saved me money and pointed me towards some good discoveries. It is the size of an oversize pocket diary so technically you could carry it with you, but it is small and in restaurant lighting you may be squinting to read the detail, best to plan ahead.
There is more to this than a country by country guide but what differentiates it is actually the country/winery writes ups, the rest is fairly standard stuff, but I have found the write ups invaluable

We first see the island through the eyes of the typical North American tourist, who aims to exchange his or her own "everydayness" for that of someone without the same privilege. But rather than interpret Antiguan experience for outsiders, Kincaid lays bare the limits of her own understanding. She asks us to grasp the crime of empire in a new way, stressing that it can be understood only from a post-colonial point of view: surveying 20 years of a corrupt "free" government, she finds the inheritance of colonialism to be a commercial and governmental enterprise that serves individual interests. Awesome book! Bought this for a class, but would definitely recommend to any friends to read for leisure. Informative and gives great perspective on the Caribbean and the tourism industry. Would recommend to anyone thinking about taking a vacation to a resort area in the Caribbean.

Would definitely recommend

Delivered on time and in pretty good condition as far as I remember.

I liked it. I thought it was an interesting read, well written, and thought provoking. I hadn't heard much of the country before having read the novel, so it really left me knowing much more than I had before reading the novel. It isn't a particularly long read, but I've read it about three or four times and enjoyed doing so. Would definitely recommend.

Kincaid offers an honest and more complete view of Antigua than most people are willing to admit. In beautiful logical language, she describes the impossible beauty that was the destruction of Antigua. Open an honest, you walk beside her as she tells you her story. A delight to Read, a small boon filled with enormous ideas and stories.

Practical Wisdom

This book is a collection of words of wisdom on various topics covering aspects of both personal and business life. It is backed by Schulich's credibility both as a successful businessman and an inspiring philanthropist. The topics covered include economics, people management, investment, leadership etc. Of course, the book does not cover any of these areas in depth, but the learnings shared are appropriately framed and presented in a way that can be applied. Of relevance to my investment interests, Schulich's advice include paying close attention to companies cash flows, and not investing in growth stocks as they will sooner or later stale. In addition, a key to success in business, is knowing when to say 'No' and this cannot be stressed enough. It is much easier said than done, yet this learning is so central to success.

Don't let the number of pages fool you, this book is a very quick read - a day or two. It is written in a very entertaining and concise manner. Given the little time investment in going through it, and the amount of experience and knowledge behind it, it was definitely worth reading!

Business Smarts

There are thousands of lifetime lessons in business books, each with its own stories and weave. This is one of them but what makes it standout is that (1) I read it, and (2) I got some good ideas from it.

The author is a self made billionaire and one of Canada's greatest philanthropists. It reminded me of something my Uncle Marty said when I was very young and I asked him what he did for a living. He replied that he was a finance manager for a big company but what he really wanted to be was a philanthropist. When I asked what that was and why he wanted to do that he replied that it was someone who gave away a lot of his own money to charity and if that is what he became it would mean that he was very wealthy. Unfortunately, he never became one, but Seymour Schulich did.

The book has many autobiographical anecdotes starting when he was a kid, through his summer job on to his massive wealth creation investments and businesses. He also throws in stories of people who overcame adversity to achieve uncommon success such as Katherine Graham's taking over the family business which she knew little about at age 46 after her husband's suicide. Under her tutelage the Washington Post grew to one of the most prestigious newspapers in the World. She gave much credit to here skilled managers, perseverance and a positive attitude. Schulich writes about Intel's Andrew Grove's management discipline - his ability to decide what is worth your time and effort, and what isn't, and then cut out the latter.

One of the many reinforced ideas I got was saying "no." We know this, we read about it, but we need to be reminded that we need to say no much more than we say yes. And every no is a rejection to someone, so we must be diplomatic and firm, and comfortable with the decision.

Howard Schultz approached 242 people for money over a four year period trying to make his business idea into reality. 217 of them turned him down. Today there are over 10,000 Starbucks. Persistence is needed in anything you want to accomplish.

Schulich gives five questions to ask when screening a potential deal or investment. Four of them coincide with the questions I tell my clients to ask. How much can I make? How much can I lose? How do I get my money back? Who says this deal is any good? The fifth one "Who else is in the deal?" is not much of a concern of mine, since many so called heavy hitters invest on reputation, gut and instinct without much due diligence, witness the Bernard Madoff scam. Now, if you could get a piece of a Warren Buffet deal...

Having skin in the game means having some pride of ownership in the project. When there is a personal risk or benefit, there is greater care. One of the author's axioms is that "business is a means to an end not an end in itself." Another one is "always ask the question "if this decision in wrong, is it going to be painful or fatal?" Lehman Brothers, Bear Stearns, Wachovia, AIG, etc., etc., etc., should have asked this question before they bet the farm on subprime mortgage derivatives.

The book is chock full of great cartoons by Ted Goff. My favorite one shows someone answering the one asking the caller to hold on for ten minutes while they are transferred to the Lost Sale Department.

A no Brainer - read it

I loved the book. Seymour Schulich is an accomplished entrepreneur billionaire which is why people might listen to him.

His advice is just old fashioned common sense (which is not that common)

The book consists of 48 very short chapters. (Don't be daunted -- this is a very simple and fast read.) It is written largely as an older man's mentoring for someone who is new and going into business. As I read the various rules, I couldn't help but smile and nod in agreement with almost everything he had to say in almost every area.

The book is not only business lessons but covers lessons on finance and life. He even gets into relationships.

I found the book to be a page turner (which might seem ironic for a business book, but perhaps I am different). It contained many gems and philosophies.

It is definitely worth the read!
